All eyes are on the French now. A day before 2003 WTTC started, who in their right mind could have predicted Schlager beating WLQ and KLH? just saying...

Well, Ito has been studied too well by the Chinese. And recent years of constant beating by the Chinese probably hurt Ito's confidence against Chinese. Choosing a young upcoming star Chinese are less familiar was not a bad selection. As a matter of fact, Miwa played well just not enough to knock down the current Olympic champion in Chen Meng and the number one ranked Sun.

It's quite shocking that Felix could hand Taiwan's Lin a solid 3:0 considering Lin was in pretty good shape for the tournament. Lin is fast player who usually can outpace most of players. However, Felix is even faster than Lin. Felix's pace made Lin uncomfortable that he spent quite some times scrambling away from the table. Felix is for sure a shining star in this world championship. If he can beat one of two Chinese, he will be the brightest young star in the world. Who have thought when pen-hold grip has been dying out in Asia, the savior is from Europe!

Why shocking? Remember that Felix won 3-0 the last time they met and Lin was playing equally well? Lin had lost to Harimoto and was pushed by Dima and Felix was scoring his usual 3-0 and 3-1 scores so I don't think that was so surprising. Now Gauzy beating Kao 3-0, that was surprising though I could rationalize it later as the uniqueness of Gauzy vs Kao playing the way the Lebruns basically play.

On French forums, people say that Gauzy feels less pressure now that he is not #1 back home and can play freely. I’d add that his maturity brings peace to the whole team for them to play as one in the best possible way.

Alexis was close with a match point. It seems he had trouble with the side spin on FZD's fh loops, long rallies were going to China too often with those. What a great match it was.

Looks like Ma Long’s racket had to be inspected after his match, and the team had to hold off on celebrating for a little bit

France made a right lineup against China by letting Alex against Fan in the second match. Last time these two met, Alex pulled out a very thin won from Fan (last point was an edge). So, he could have better chance squeezing a win there. Well, he almost did if he could have closed the fourth game when he was 2:1 in the match and 10:9 in the game. Alex got the right man he wanted. However, his young brother Felix had to face Wang which was unfortunate. Wang had been so hot through out the tournament until he met Korea's Jang in the semi. Playing at home, Jang was so inspired and played so unbelievable table tennis that stunned Wang. The stumble had waken up the monster inside Wang and he played even more incredible. When Wang is in such a form, he'll make anyone look like coming a minor league. The beating on Felix was so trough that the young French couldn't do anything. Noticing, most plays was over within the first four shots. A little surprise that Wang could finish him so quickly and cleanly. Good thing Felix is still young. Giving him a couple of more years, lets see what he can do.

Hopefully France can deliver a similar performance and result for their home crowd at the Olympics.
France was the only non-Asian medalist here in both men’s and women’s as well.

You are giving France too much credit. The pairings are largely decided by putting your best players on the slot to play the 4th match and your second best player in the slot to play the 5th match and your worst player to play the slot for the 3rd match. So as long as these rules were followed, Alexis was always going to play Fan first and Felix was always going to play Wang first. In fact, I wrote the whole pairing put yesterday well before the finals started and argued that the most important match was Wang vs Felix (others were saying Felix vs Fan, which I argued we may not get to see because someone on France needed to win to make it happen). Felix struggled to read Wang's serve and let those struggles make him play worse. It's insane that age can upset talent so much in temperament but it is a fact of life. Hopefully he will learn that in any struggle, as long as he is level headed, he will play better but that the tantrums will make him play worse across the board when he is already struggling.

I think it is more like why they did NOT play Chen Meng against India (Chen Meng is higher ranked than Wang Manyu but not by much though Chen Meng I think is Olympic Champion or World Champion but Wang Manyu is not ? ) Looks like maybe Chen Meng is weak against pips & anti ? Chen Meng & Wang Yidi lost doubles to Mukherjees (Ayhika & Sutirtha) in Asian Games 2023 BTW Wang Yidi lost 0-3 to Sreeja Akula It is all about match ups & somewhat about past results history. One could also speculate China took it easy but if so they could have rested both Sun Yingha & Cheng Meng & China could have played their #4 & #5 players but they did not Edited by LBK77 - 02/26/2024 at 6:45pm |

Rankings have been updated. No big changes at the top. Chen Meng swapped places with Wang Yidi at #2 and #3.
Too bad for Kirill Gerassimenko's efforts that he remained at #40.
Nikhil Kumar moved up 100 spots to #281. |

I think there is a movement to remove Ma Lin as the women's coach. Quite sure that Chen Meng is one of Ma Lin's favored players. Ma Lin didn't want to stir that pot by risking a loss with her.
