these so called ''short pips top players'' are just very good players because of their beastly good forehand loops and footwork. They have a poor backhand, so they put a sheet of sp on their backhand. They rely on their forehand loop much more than on there backhand. I can't really see what's so great about the short pips play of Tan Ruiwu and Tang Peng. The only one that does have a very nice backhand is Wang Hao. IMHO if you want to see real good SP play you have to watch penholders like Liu Guoliang and He Zhi wen. Or women players like Ruta Pauskaskienne, Ai Fukuhara etc.

I tend to agree with this but I think it is more true of Tan Ruiwu than Tang Peng. In general it is a tough way for top men to make a living, they are giving up a lot offense when they are pushed back. It definitely works better for women (and for men who are not at world class levels). |

I've never met someone who is good at using short pips that says they just threw a sheet of SP on there because they had a poor backhand. It's because they like the playing style and the variety of play they have with it.
Defenders give up offense when they are away from the table, too.
when you see short pips players off the table, they can hit if they are good, or you see them chop. Chopping is an effective option. It's yet another way of changing the rhythm of the rally.
They are hardly poor at backhand play. A lot of times, they WANT to engage in backhand-backhand play. Listen to how they describe Tang Peng in the Match Against Werner Schlager- Tang Peng hardly ever encounters someone who is BETTER at BH-BH exchange, and along with Werner Schlager being a better tactician, tang peng loses.
Watch Tan Ruiwu-Li Ching at Beijing 08, tell me Tan has a poor backhand.
You see these short pips players- their fh's aren't really any better than other top players. Especially chinese. But the rhythm of their game is different. The way they play their game and set up their forehands is different. They don't have worse backhands, they have different backhands. Just because a ball isn't topspinning a lot every time doesn't make it weak. Off the bounce play especially at the angles that Tang Peng or Tan Ruiwu are using is very effective. The reason Tang Peng isn't a higher ranked player is mostly because he is streaky, but also he lacks the same footwork of the better chinese. Not because he has a "poor backhand"

Brian Pace averages 2400+ and just switched to pips on the backhand. He has always had a great backhand loop with inverted however. He basically said in an interview that he was throwing off his opponents with the flat hit. A fast dead ball is very hard to attack.

I posted this video over a year ago and still no info on his pips. At the time I was using short pips and it really bothered me not knowing. The only thing I can say is he has to be speed gluing the hell out of both wings. Especially his short pips considering how fast those backhands off the table were during the rally at 6:30. |

if you focus on results sp can give you an advantage in some cases. however I think the game has more variables and is a bit more fun with inverted. besides you can be more offensive, with sp you naturally move to a more blocking game. Edited by sa01 - 11/12/2011 at 10:10pm |
