Well if you believe that will or won't be the result why?
I actually wanted to ask other questions about this event. Is there a list anywhere of all the player names for each team that are attending? Especially since they are up first Chinese, Belarus, German, French women's team? Edited by bozbrisvegas - 03/26/2012 at 9:47am |

the best I have found is that you can buy it on universal sports for 10 bucks per day or 40 for the whole tournament. Here is the link if anyone in the US is interested.

USA is doing well so far! I think the scoring on there is messed up though, it shows them with 2 wins, 1 loss, but they only have played 2 opponents, so unless they defaulted and it wasn't recorded...the whole scoring chart looks pretty amateurish atm honestly...incomplete results, inconsistent methods of writing it out, etc.
From what I can gather, Landers is 2-0, Hugh is 2-0, Reed 1-0, Wang 1-0 so far against Malaysia and Qatar. |

US men are only in the 3rd division this year (for the first time in many years) and are supposed to do well there. The goal is to move back up to the 2nd division.
US women are in the championship division, that's a whole different story. They lost 1-3 to Romania, a good result considering that Gao Jun didn't play. Lily Zhang beat world #47 Daniela Dodean, and Ariel Hsing almost beat Dodean as well - lost 13-15 in the 5th, too bad! |

Not sure what you mean by "Asian." All US women were born in the USA, except for Gao Jun, who was born in China (and who didn't play against Romania). All members of the US men's team were also born in the USA, for the first time in many years. Three of them are Asian-American. |

I think everybody unsderstands what I mean by Asian. It's like saying where do you come from? Where do the German and Polish women come from? The answer is Asia.

"The German and Polish women" come from Asia? Do Silbereisen, Ivancan, Grzybowska, Partyka look Asian to you?
Ovtcharov comes from Ukraine, what should we call him? Is Kreanga Romanian? What's the use of those general labels? Look at each individual's life story, they're all different. And so back to the US girls: no, they don't come from Asia. Their parents did. Edited by amateur - 03/26/2012 at 9:53am |

Exactly right. Not everyone understands (or means) the same thing when you say "they're Asian". Lily and Ariel are Chinese-American. Their native language is English and they were born and raised in America. Gao Jun is also Chinese-American, but a first-generation immigrant who's lived in the states for years and years. When you say "Asian", I assumed that you were referring to first-generation immigrants like Gao Jun (i.e., grew up under the Chinese table tennis system and now play for another country). If you meant players like Lily as well, then I'm not sure why you're lumping all Asians together in the first place given such different backgrounds.

I suppose when Wu Jiaduo moved to Germany she lost her Asian heritage.
Anyway I live in Asia and am married to an Asian and when she immigrates to Australia she will still be Asian. If they were born in the country they represent that is a different thing and that is what I was asking. |

Thanks for clarifying. Not everyone means the same thing when they say that someone "is Asian."
If/when you have kids, how do you want people to refer to them? And how much will it matter where exactly they are born? |

You are confusing here the race and the nationality (as well as the cultural aspect). Of course, they are Asian by race, that is by the continent of origin of their ancestors, but in the United States (especially currently) this is not what is meant when people are said to be Asian. Wu was born in China and moved to Germany when she was already a rather fully formed human being, her cultural upbringing (and her TT technique, by the way) being Chinese. Ariel, Lily and Erica were all born in the USA (their parents are first-gen Asian immigrants), they were raised in the USA, have cultural setup of American teenagers. Of course, they are somewhat different from their classmates as family dynamic is different - but that is true for so many families that we should not even go into that. In the USA there are so many immigrants and their children from Europe, Africa, Asia, Latin America. If we started calling each of them Hungarian (John von Neumann, mathematician), Russian (Lenny Krayzelburg, swimmer), Kenyan (Obama, president), Chinese (Jeffrey Lin, basketball player), Mexican (Joan Baez, singer/songwriter) - it would not only lead to confusion but also impact the whole idea of the US as the melting pot which is not supposed to make distinction by where the people come from but rather by what these people are, how they live and contribute to the overall culture etc. So we say that these girls are American (not even Asian-American, I might add) but if someone is really interested in their racial makeup, we could add they are Asian-Americans - usually saying that they are fully American, meaning they were born and raised here with all that follows. A personal example: I was not born in the US but immigrated here almost 20 years ago. I cannot really call myself an American (I am a citizen though), because I was not raised here, my inner culture is Russian, I read books in both languages, I am more comfortable (still) talking in Russian when I want to convey nuances. My kids however were all born here, they went to American daycare and schools, and despite the fact that both their parents are Russian-born, despite the fact that we speak Russian at home, they are American kids through-and-through (sometimes a bit too much, alas) with all the pluses and minuses that entails. They do not want to read Russian books (although they attend Russian language classes), they do not listen to their parents the way we did etc etc... so whenever someone asks me "where are you from?" I hesitate because I need to ascertain if the answer should be "from Massachusetts" or if (based on context) they expect to hear something like "Eastern Europe" or "Russia, originally". Hope that helps. |

It's because of the massive cultural differences between the USA and Australia Jim and Boz see this differently. In the States there have been recent racial upheavals and lots of things are still taboo even if they shouldn't be. In Australia you can and will be called a Russian, German, Greek or Asian if that's what you are even if it's been generations since your family moved. Even races that are fully integrated into the wider society like Australian Greeks and Italians will more often than not call themselves by their race rather than where they were born and so they should. A Pine tree in my garden doesn't become a Eucalypt just because it's planted there.
If Jim's kids were living in Australia they would be all over "I'm a Russian" and they would be dam proud of it Edited by bluebucket - 03/26/2012 at 12:43pm |
