God juniors are annoying.

"Sa! Come on! Sa! Come on!"

I don't get why they even have any rules about talking anymore. You should either expand the rule to cover making sounds of any sort above a certain volume, or get rid of it all together. Screaming like an idiot every point isn't my style but I can trash talk with the best of them. Smile

On a side note: Butler's backhand seemed off compared to what I saw in Austin.

In Austin Jim's BH punch smash was spot on 9 / 10 times but it didn't look the same way against Ariel besides she was also able to block some of those back to Jimmy which was simply awesome.

Screaming happens in almost every sport. Honestly, it's like your wanting to communize pong. This is America.

Communize pong? I don't see how politics has anything to do with it. Don't be so dramatic. I did say "get rid of it all together". "It" being the rule about not talking.

thank you for the videos!

What is "sa"? Is it like cho?

I still feel that cheering your opponent's mistakes lacks class in any sport and it's a shame it's so ingrained in TT culture.

I am a big proponent that children should not play against adults in sanctioned tournaments.  It's bad for both sides.

-For the kids they'd feel they are going up against Goliath, with their parents urging on by the sideline that add even more pressure on their little shoulders.

-For the adults they'd feel like it's not "polite" to kick these little ones' behind with brute force in front of everybody, but at the same time they are not there to lose...

*Having interacted with enough parents who bring their kids to our Saturday kids' group lessons, I can safely say most parents do not want their kids to "cho" or "sa" in obnoxious ways, but they simply do not have any control over their kids' emotions like in the days past.  Kids today believe in "independence" and "individualism" over anything, and will rebel against their parents readily.  The "choing" is a phase that will pass for most children.

I think "Sa" means kill in mandarin if i'm not mistaken. I have seen Ariel play from 2008 and she has been "Sa"ing ever since. It is a very annoying sound and she says that during the point, after the point, in between the point.

During the point? Nonsense.

She used to say it before each point, but now it's only after a point that she's won.

Compared to other juniors (especially boys) Ariel is actually fairly quiet.

I don't know the meaning of "sa", it's mostly used by the Koreans not the Chinese.

Jimmy's certainly not as sharp as in Austin (travel fatigue maybe) and made some bad errors, but Ariel was good at keeping the balls low and deep on the table making hard for Butler to find his range.  Not a bad outcome if he really only started getting serious a few months ago.

For anyone thinking Ariel's game crys are annoying, here's couple for reference:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vKE9gihHlcw (for the record the absolute most annoying match I've ever watched in unabridged entirety)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qC8VVCdJIAs (really cute, makes me smile everytime)

Koreans don't use "sa" at all. Mostly, they Cho after a point or say"Joha" (which sounds like Cho-Ah) that means "Good" They also say "Geu Loe Gi" which means "Yeah, Like That" Many (Like say Ryu Seung Min for exzample) say "Hwa" right before the point. It is just a noise tht prepares and self motivates.

Sometimes, after an important point or when there is a winner after a hard-fought looooong rally, you might hear "Ah-Saht". Koreans say that in many sports in that situation when they win a point, especially an important one.  It is kinda like saying "Touche" or "Got Ya"

I suppose you're not following the women much. Kim Kyung Ah for example says "sa" all the time (mostly before a point, sometimes after).

Can anyone share who Xia Jiwei is? is he US citizen? I never saw or hear about him but he plays very nice form and his FH is deadly. His BH flip is very like PRO. I watched youtube, he beat Fan Yiyong 2011 Pacific Rim tournament.

Also, Jim Butler must be old??? At what era was he the top 100? like Warner time?

Sa is like a motivation or to release some energy. For example, in karate, they say stuff to be able to hit/block better. It's the same way in TT. If you can release what is inside of you, you'll be able to play better and focus more. It's not annoying, it's technique.

I wouldn't say it's not annoying and not distracting, but I'm with you. In martial arts, they make those sounds also to scare/intimidate the opponent. So many of you noobs don't understand this. TT is not a gentleman's sport, most sports aren't, because the objective is to WIN! Also, some tt players/fighters in other sports choose to put on the quiet poker face. Whatever works for you, do it.
