People who express their disdain and hatred of this forum and who go out of their way to push boundaries disappear from the forum. Since they obviously hate the forum they shouldn't miss it, right?

Am I the only one who finds it crazy that a player that is possibly the best in the world is warming the bench for the CNT?

They actually already do with Chien Chen An. I consider them a medal favorite for the team Olympics.

Although few upsets, it is still high probability CNT teams will win all 5 golds. No matter what, it seems Ito will be high chance #2 in ranking. Enjoy Saturday matches. Not sure when next ITTF platinum tour will happen.

The closed history and theory of Olympic table tennis participation.
As much discussed and concluded more times on this forum than I care to recall but scientifically the Olympics is best to be accurately analysed as a selective closed sporting event (note not open competition in its literal and accurate sense) whereby the Olympic spirit prefer a global community of some and NOT all of the most (as proven by open tournament performance records) sports participants. Because of the history and continuing domination of a particular association (through merit, skill and no other fault) the Olympics is now a best of the rest lesser sporting “competition”. Therefore in this particular sporting table tennis (under ITTF rules) meeting only one or a maximum of two participants may be invited per association as although you may have arguably the usual four or even more regularly most winning players in a real fair and open tournament from the usual most winning association you will have no opportunity to exercise your skill and potentially overall winning abilities as you can only do so if you represent a new lesser association as one of two leading players from this other lesser association and then be allowed to complete despite your ability and proven open tournament winning record. Having one or a maximum of two players from any association would therefore as evidenced in past more open Olympic Games ensure that there is technically no possibility of the clean podium sweep. In the past it is evidently clear that the third bronze medal have been awarded to possibly a player who may have otherwise not been able to reach the semi finals in a knock out open tournament if all other normally more wining players also entered the same competition. Conversely the Olympics rather has an extreme open acceptability and global community spirit as in past games new non geographic stateless amateur refugee participants were invited despite their evidently much lower sporting ability. Taking the same pure sporting performance train of thought this indeed also is to the disadvantage to even more players of higher proven open tournament track winning records as essentially the Olympic sporting standards have been lowered to a very extraordinarily mixed ability performance level. Perhaps if some players and regular proven open tournament winners can temporarily gain an invitation through representation of a UN refugee stateless status or perhaps a new as yet unrecognised quasi nation then players like the obvious ones mentioned in the above post and many others may be able to “compete” or at least have the opportunity to defeat lesser performance level “qualifying” Olympics players who are evidently making up numbers as “Olympian participants” along the line of invited judges and umpires as proven time after time until perhaps some new young as yet undiscovered rising star some how emerges on to the scene through Olympic participation and we all know from repeated history which association(s) those players factually have materialised from! Let the snowflakes remote keyboard warrior “experts” begin their fun and games but hey be nice and be kind as it’s only sport and this time I do not require you to take my words out of context as the debate is over as hey perhaps who knows maybe this Olympic low level circus may be avoided this time round until the next one with perhaps again changing the rules to only maximum one player per association or let’s just say what it is an outright ban on players who have a fair likelihood of winning to be banned for being too good and from the same always winning association! Perhaps they should also ban doubles because you need to stop the one same association any chance of taking that winning medal too!

Possibly the best in the world? Based on what results? And for the reading impaired: 1) Just because I dont think WCQ is the best player in the world, I do not hate him 2) Just because I dont think WCQ is the best player in the world, I do not think he is a terrible player Thank you

I learned my lesson when I posted that I thought Kanak was not one of the top 30 players on the planet. People assume I hate Kanak or think he is terrible. This is not the case. Now I worry people will think I hate WCQ or think he is terrible. This is also not the case. Even with a disclaimer it might be too dangerous to comment on HT or WCT so I will refrain, for now.

While he was suspended, he was told he would be allowed to participate I the Marvelous 12 only if he won the trials without losing a match. He went 20-2, and won the trials but of course didn't get to play. The lid has had a very high level for a while and anyone who watches him a lot can see that there is something special about the quality and pace of his play because he does it with extremely high consistency. It will be interesting to see how things pan out for him over the next few months.

The issue with Kanak is more nuanced than that. I watch a lot of table tennis. Maybe not just letting the stats determine my evaluation of the players biases me. If you watch the players as much as I do let me know (and no I don't think it is required or good to do so). What gets me about Kanak is that everyone I speak to is more intimately familiar with his failures than his successes because the people who should be most excited about him (Americans) show very little familiarity with his results. I was speaking to a friend at my club and he left that Kanak was behing both Gustavo Tsuboi and Hugo Calderano. I had to tell him that Kanak usually beats Guatavo in recent times and that he has gotten closer and closer to getting his first win vs Hugo. The issue is not whether he is top 50 or top 30 or top 100. The issue in my view is that Americans are just not knowledgeable enough and excited about the achievements of their best players. After barely losing to Gustavo in Puerto Rico while clearly struggling, Kanak played Gustavo in the German League and beat Gustavo 3-1. Someone called that a good win. At this point, it is nothing unusual for Kanak. Yet we are still stuck in this view of American TT as only something non professional kids play.

WCQ’s performance at China’s internal trials is strong evidence that he is one of the very best in the world. I would like to see him perform better internationally before I would put him in the top 3. He’s definitely top 10 and has a good chance to be world champion.
I follow table tennis a bit too much. I have my own ideas about what a top 10, top 50 or top 100 player looks like based on their results and how they play. Kanak is ridiculously good. Go hit with anyone in the top 1000 and their level will be amazing. Top 50 players have insane skill sets. I think Kanak is right around that level. He is still young and improving so there is no telling where he will end up. Especially based on his last few performances.

I am an American and have watched Kanak playing since he was 8 or 9, and am very familiar with his achievements nationally as well as internationally. Even though I am very proud of him, as soon as I mentioned his lack of power in FH, I am labeled as a Kanak hater. I guess some of his fans just can’t handle an honest opinion, or worse, the truth. You know what, now I don’t really care to be a Kanak hater anymore. I still don’t think he will be a real top world player (top 5) unless he dramatically improves his FH.

Statistically, predicting that anyone who is not now a top five WR player will not be top five wr in the future is extremely safe. For obvious reasons an overwhelming majority of top 50 wr players never enter the top five. More than 90%. As noted in the thread they are still quite good players.

Ding Ning had absolutely no chance against Ito Mima, who reminds me alot of Deng Yaping. Both have similar heights with close to the table counter attacking style of play and minimal use of topspin strokes. Ito's level of play gives us the perspective how good Deng was as a player. I have no doubt Deng would still dominate the women's game today if she is still an active player in her prime.
