Nice, seems like your a good multi ball feeder. Plus I always enjoy left hand feeders more (I'm a righty)

I think it is better to try and reduce David's swing.
IMO It will cause some lost of precious time for next shot

that swing is wrong! there should be some elbow snap as you hit the ball.

and why are those girls slapping the ball so flat? Are they using pips? they should use some spin.

I agree that is tennis-like.  I don't believe anybody does big full swing every shot.  Even WLQ or ML only swing like that when they go for the kill, and even them will have trouble if the ball get blocked back.

Nothing wrong with that swing or the girls shots. Those kids will adjust and add different elements to their technique over time.

Nice facility there, especially the cantaloupe color of the wall

All those people in the video are showing decent use of body mechanics.  It's easy to tell they have a firm grasp of the concept of hitting and grazing contacts.

It looks like there is a lot of follow through past the midline.  I thought keeping strokes shorter was the current teaching.
How do they react to a the shot blocked back to them after the long follow through strokes?

Only David, Sarah, and Zach are ready faster and more complicated multiball drills.  Most of the other kids still need to work on their basics.

Keep up the good work.

Agree, and plus as the youngster grow taller, the technique will change.
IMO it is because the girls are still short and tiny thus it looks like slapping the ball

are they practising special variation of strokes or basics? If basics then they need to be corrected, especially the first player doing extended arm swings. You can't let learners start with bad form and hope they will develop good form later.

This is multiball and there are some technique issues to address, but what strikes me is the nice timing and very nice acceleration into the shot by almost all the players.

All to often you see players starting the swing to fast and contacting the ball at more or less the same speed. These guys start out slow and have a smooth and controlled acceleration to create a more fierce and crisp ball contact. Good work :)

See how the swing works in real matches:

I have been coaching Zach for a little more than a year, David a few months and girls 2-3 months. In time they will all become much better.

I am in the big swing Chinese school. To me, that is the way to swing.

I share the same sentiment, rating system is horrible for juniors. Instead of working on the fundamentals, too often we are obsessed with their ratings. Despite that, David is rated just over 1600, and I hope to make him 2200 within a few years. And yes we are in NW Chicago suburbs.

Not sure why that's a facepalm. I seem to recall David was around 1600 when I saw him at a tourney. That was a while ago though, maybe he's gone up, as most youngsters playing regularly do.

Heh, I found him in the ratings page because I remembered a guy's name he played. Current rating is 1613.

Ah, I see, it's very true that rating means very little. It is easy to protect your rating by only entering the higher events. You can lose 9/10 of your matches, but the occasional win boosts your rating up and all the losses don't hurt you.

I apologise. I forgot how obsessed US players can be about ratings.

An update of these kids from the video. All have progressed well. Some highlights of them playing:

David match 1: (opponent is over 2100, David lost)

David match 2: (opponent is around 1800, David won the match)

David forehand (I have had a number of people telling me the swing is too big)

Sarah match 1

Jeffrey match 1 (he was not in the first video)

I hope to make all of them into elite players by the time they go to college. Just don't ask me their ratings in the next year or so :)

Sarah seems to strongly prefer her BH - She's setting up with her right foot in front of the left.
I could be completely wrong on this, but I would think this cause some inconsistency in her loop (though not evident in the video) and give her some trouble on recovery because she'll bring that foot even more forward as she finishes the shot - leaving her FH side more vulnerable to a block.

Looking good though.

It also seems as though you're emphasizing getting into the rally as soon as possible by serving long so often (could just be the clips you posted).  I think this is great for improving their offense and blocking, but might hurt them in the short game and touch.

She turns to her left even more with her backhand before I started coaching her. I teach her to have two feet even when hitting the backhand. She is also just learning how to serve short. She had a few in that match and scored right away, so it was not very fun to include in the highlights. No comments on the boys?
