Alright, let me rephrase. I think it's either Cowardly OR Very Intelligent to Apologize. Hey buddy, I don't want to offend you, but do you really mean it when you say you're sorry? If you have taken a psychology class, you will know humans are by nature extremely competitive. That's why we are still alive and we're the most dominant animal in the kingdom. Competitions whether it's a spelling bee or sport were made because we are by nature extremely competitive, (we want to be the best, we want to win) That said, I don't think you play ping pong to lose right? You play to win of course. So you do you really mean it when you say you're sorry for winning? Me and my training partner aren't the only weird ones out there. Did you watch the hardbat classic? The commentator(probably not a frequent tt player) got upset when a player apologized for a net/edge. He said something like, "wow that is very unsportsmanlike" So if I'm playing someone that I don't know and I think he expects an apology. Then, I will raise a finger. But if I play with you often, I will not apologize, I don't like playing in deceptive/intelligent shell, I'd rather play openly, just my style.

so when you hit the ball did you intent for it to go of the edge or the the top of the net and bounce three times on the other side.maybe it just letting the opponent no that you acknowledge that its a bit of luck. the game yesterday with the young Chinese player and Jiang Tinyi the player hit the net a few times choed on a couple of those and didn't apologize on the third one. this is a bit rude.

Koreans take sorry to the extreme. They apologize for even hitting a winner to a spot you were not expecting. When they do that, I always stop the point and point out that they made a good shot and it was only that - a good shot, not something to be sorry about, like say a bottomspin push that hit the net or an edgeball they got when they popped it up and i was ready to kill it. Those kind are the cheap points.
At the same time, the Koreans are Uber competitive in not only sports, but in many aspects of life. I am 10x that way and get both respected and despised despised (mostly for my over competitive ways) for my nature.
I always acknowledge if I won a point by luck, especially if it was a psuh, i always say "sa-go-li jeom-soo" "Cheap Point" if I do that. I even apologize if I countered a wide shot that was impossible and claim I was lucky. My training is getting me to return more and more of these shots, but I still feel it is sheer luck that I get them back on the table when it is obvious the point is lost. (Those are the plays where the ball is EXTREME wide and I lunge and barely get the racket on the ball for a surprise winner back the other way wide.)
Those are the polite "I'm Sorry" that are accepted.
The offensive shots that clip the net and go in are irritating, but the percentages show most of those shots hit the net and fly way out. I don't like appologizing for those, because I took most of the risk - the odds are against me in that situation.

Samsinov is one of the best pro players in this regard. His body language of lifting a finger at opponent after he celebrated winning the points does the best job (in his way) of telling the opponent he won the point by luck, but is still happy he won the point.)

That player was probably trained to cho when lightning strikes you and turns you into Pommes Frittes. Cut him some slack. Take a tire iron to his father though.

But there are many lights to this. You can say Jiang is trying to mess with his opponents head, or you can say he is being honest, therefore a good sport, or you can say like mention he's being a bad sport by not apologizing. If you are really sorry for getting an edge or net point, why don't you forfeit the game? When I play I don't intentionally go for the edges and nets(I'm not that good), but I don't mind getting them! I don't think anyone minds getting them, or people would be forfeiting games. "Oh noes, I got a net, I'm so sorry. I will forfeit the game, you win"

I understand the whole "I didnt mean to do that" feeling, but lets be realistic here, if you hit nets and edges that often then you are a god and should surely be on your way to number one. We know that no one ever really means to do that, so apologizing is more or less a sympathetic thing. Instead of one finger or hand, I just jump around in absolute JOY screaming YES YES YES!!!! Only kidding of course, but congrats to you for pulling off a lucky/amazing shot.
