It was apparently �In".
But the assistant umpire's judge was "Out" and the Singapore got a point. That was an unbelievabe misjudge. As Mizutani complained and explained it to the umpire, he returned the ball from inside of the table, thus it couldn't be 'side'. |

It's hard to call that though. Even if the logic is right, in the heat of the moment it's hard to see. The angle changes ever so slightly, and the sound would have been very low since it's such a gentle hit. I don't fault the umpire for missing a call like that.
While the umpire may have missed the call, you can blame the player for missing his shot (Mizutani would have aimed to get solid contact, not an edge, so he erred by hitting it too far to the side to get the edge). |
