  Hello !

One of my buddy asked me to make a backhand looping tutorial video so I made one and I thought it would be also good for anyone who's relatively new to table tennis ( I'm not trying to '' teach '' you pros so dont worry LOL ).

  Link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l0kaLpLrF1E

  Hope you will enjoy!

P.S The video is still being processed so the quality will be improved when it's done, now it's rather sucky.

Big%20smile Well, first I'm not Kreanga LOL and second, I think the way I play this stroke gives me much higher control and more topspin on the stroke. Anyway, I'm a chopper, I don't need that much backhand, just sometimes surprise the opponent when I twiddle and loop in their face Tongue

@tpgh2k: I think I've just sent them to your place Evil%20Smile You want tracking numbers? hehehehhe

Your action is too big, arm is really floppy. Your wrist flick is too long and relaxed so you lose out on velocity. I didn't watch the video all the way through the first time and your loop gets better later on in the video. For a defender it's pretty good (y)

TBS9x: your video is fine. THis kind of BH loop is not for power purposes, it is one of the several ways to play it, based on spin. I think I play it almost the same as you do. I use it in situations when I am not in good position to play fast and usualy when I am little bit late and the ball is falling down.
As you said, this stroke with long movement of the arm has higher control. It is good to keep you in a game and to vary the tempo and spin in the game. I think this is very good video and this kind of loop sould be the first to start with

Ye well, as you see this kinda of loop is definitely not based on speed but spin and control but the ball is low and loads with topspin so it will still travel quite fast and I think it's easier to play this stroke more consistently than play like Kreanga does, he's just extraordinary.

i thought you looked smooth and controlled. and that you have that set of arm mechanics well grooved.

An older Chinese coach here in the US (about US2300 even though he only has one leg that works) showed me a similar stroke (the arm motion was almost the same).

The big difference in what he showed me and what you are doing is that he recommended that

a) the start position should be shoulder forward and dropped
b) the lift comes from the legs - from standing,
c) the stability comes from the hip/torso rotation

and then the arm follows to make a "rainbow" motion as you currently do it.

with more of the body involved, you'll not only have greater consistency (which looks like the goal of this shot) but also, you'll be able to swing more safely (your leg and torso will generate enough power that you don't have to take risks generating inconsistent power with your arm).

i don't even have a BH loop, and yet the coaches clear description (dropped shoulder, then standing and torso rotation with arm moving out and away from center) allowed me to safely and powerfully enough put > 70% of the underspin balls on the table as a loop.

now i just need to find someone to feed me underspin pushes so i can practice it on my own ; i am jealous.

Thanks for your comment icontek. Though I don't really use backhand attacking strokes anymore ( or very rarely ) I don't think the stroke is too bad itself, even it look sloppy or soft. When I was 10, this stroke brought me my 1st prize at the first competition I've ever played Big%20smile Because I used all long serves and block or simply loop to both sides the whole time and they were like WTF LOL

For me, there is no such thing as 'too this' and 'not enough that' unless it affects your consistency and objective, some of, infact most of the best b/hands ever are not 'perfect' technically, perfection is a myth, if it complements your game, its fine.

these 2 vids are actually a lot better to watch.  they are super slow-motion vids of LARS HIELSCHER of germany, current ittf world ranking: 118.

http://www.tt-total.tv/specials/regional-west/videos/ansicht/technikvideos-wttv/rueckhand-topspin/lars-hielscher-zl-rht-us/
  bh topspin against backspin

http://www.tt-total.tv/specials/regional-west/videos/ansicht/technikvideos-wttv/rueckhand-topspin/lars-hielscher-zl-rht-os/  bh counterloop

since these are super slo-mos, you can see exactly what he's doing and they give you a side angle and an angle from the front.

oh, and here's yet another angle, this time from front and below. how they did that, i don't know, but, anyhow, there you go:

http://www.tt-total.tv/specials/regional-west/videos/ansicht/technikvideos-wttv/rueckhand-topspin/lars-hielscher-rht-us-gp/

for a noobie, or anybody for that matter, you need to see exactly what someone is doing, and that's tough to do if it's not in super slo-mo...

Sorry - I did not mean to sound critical - and I certainly am in no position to judge. From my limited perspective, I thought TBSx's arm motion was very fluid and looked very comfortable and controlled. It looks like a terrific asset, especially if he is playing combination and twiddling.

Truer words were not said. Everybody has different body mechanics, so different things may work for different people.
