My friend keeps argueing that the backhand serve is back spin. I believe it is back spin+side spin. Who is correct?

If it curves theres sidespin, unless by some miracle he can disguise corkscrew with his backhand.

that will probably be back/sidespin
I bet I know what happens when you push it,your pushes go long
if that's the case then it's just light sidespin, you have to take that ball early and with a very loose wrist just touch it over the net,if you try to add spin or push it hard it will go long

the BH serve is just a serve that can do anything, eg all types of spin
the serve is special, because u can attack immediately from the 2 sides of the field( BH and FH )
btw it is created by kong ling hui

Yes, I usually serve FH but I'm pretty sure that bh servers can do anything fh servers do. Alot of times, serves that seem backspinny are rarely only backspin anyway. |

As I understand it Rong Guotan created the first backhand serve as we know it. Though Kong Linghui's was rather good, his motion is very hard to pick up on.

The backhand serve has been around since the early days of Table tennis in the 1880's..
The introduction of sponges back in the 1950's meant it was possible for players to generate more spin, thanks to the sponge. The backhand serve we use today has evolved as a direct result of the extra spin we can generate because of the rubbers we use. Regarding spin, you can generate whatever spin you want, depending on how you contact the ball. Granted the forehand pendulum serve is a more modern way of serving, but backhand serving has been around since the start. |
