    Posted: 10/15/2012 at 12:29am
I am surprised at the number of player who get a new blade and don't sand the sharp edges at the bottom of the wings. There is that perfect feel I must have that I only get with sanding down those sharp edges. When serving my right hand is always up close to the blade to get max feel for best blade angle on serves. Sometimes I must lightly sand the handle but that is rare except for Stiga blades which are always rough feeling. The best out of the box blade that needed zero sanding was my Donic Epox Power Carbon ( fantastic feel). After sanding is complete I rub in a small amount of lemon oil  to seal the wood from hand sweat and grim. I know the pro's spend considerable attention to the way their blades feel in every sense sometimes bordering on obsesive compulsive behavior. Am I nuts too or do you guys and gals strive for that "perfect" feel too? Beer

I always sand the shoulders when they are sharp, and always seal the handles

and lately i've been heavily filing/sanding one side of an Expert flared handle to fit my hand as optimally as possible

Always file down the wings and sand them smooth to accomodate my grip which is a bit to tight.

I always sand the sharp edges too. Never could understand why some players don't do that as it really feels uncomfortable.  I like the idea of sealing it with Lemon oil. I use Joola's blade sealer, but I like the idea of using something more natural like the lemon oil. I also sand the handle slightly on my Donic Burn blade as it's on the large side.

You can use epoxy around the wings to arrive at a similar goal but in a different way.

The "wings"" are the bottom of the blade where the top of your hand contacts the wood. Sanding those sharp edges increases comfort and provides a more broken in feel. Sealing protects the blade and handle from age and grim and facilitates easy rubber removal without the wood splintering. Hope this helps.

I guess I never really got into the habit of sanding my blades and so now I don't feel the need to. It's true that after an extended period of play, the wings can dig in a bit but I don't think it bothers me all that much and I'd probably feel weird if it changed now.

Creatures of habit I suppose.

i should have clarified that if i decide a blade's shoulders are too sharp, i first lightly file them with a needle file, then lightly sand

extremely easy to do with a professional looking outcome
