I think alot of the time these umpires have to show they have the "power" and "control". Otherwise why bother having them there? I really dislike them giving out yellow card especially to Jim Butler? Asking about the edge ball is not "wrong" and I don't understand why did he deserve a yellow card? Also, fault the player on serves without giving a warning seems very harsh. Anyway, enough venting....congrats on everyone who made the team. Now let's see is the 5th Coach's pick is what expected (unfortunately it probably is internally decided already at this point regardless of the results).

This umpire has been promoting that he was selected to umpire in Tokyo for the Worlds.  I think he was also playing the international umpire in the table tennis movie "As One".

I am definitely thinking about taking the tests and be an umpire.  I will set the tone in the match by calling all the illegal serves that is thrown backwards on purpose or the ball travels 24 inches horizontally and 6-8 inches vertically.

It never does. That's why I always encourage more players to get qualified.
I am an umpire. But I know many players that are far better than me at umpiring. But the situation is different here in that basically every player umpires matches below National level. Eg, you will see our National players such as Drinkhall and Pitchford, umpiring at Grand Prix tournaments etc.
Not ideal but they all willingly contribute instead of solely criticising.

Spot on Tiny! All players in UK umpire matches, from the lowest level to the highest, no matches are ever played in competition without an umpire. Not so in USA, they score games themselves in the early rounds of tournaments, then maybe have an umpire in the latter stages. Even at the lowest level of local league players get used to seeing umpiring from the umpires point of view in Uk, so we all know Its not easy. The ETTA consistently have produced world class umpires for many years and I have always admired them and know many of them as friends.
The Older I get, The better I was.

Umpire's most tragic lapses to set the entire Universe crying to deaf.

Who cares about some slight misrulings in some secondary sport (ping-pang) not broadcasted to mass public at all.?

Guys, let's stop and review. As it was already pointed out, the order of serves was messed up since 0-4 when Cory started serving instead of Yahao, then at 4-8 the umpires finally realized that they need to get back to the proper serving order. By the rules, all the points stand. The fact that neither one of the players realized it is easily explainable - the players are very nervous, it is a close match, they trust that umpires are scoring and they do not have to occupy their brains by that which is actually a relief sometimes. But the fact that umpires didn't catch it right away is a bit disappointing, of course.

Has nothing to do though with Cory searing and getting the yellow card. Also has really nothing to do with matches being generally un-umpired in the USA. This match (as every other match at the Trials) WAS umpired by the National level umpires so what does it matter whether other matches at some tournaments are or aren't.

simple math, along with writing down who actually served first in the match

would have made the point (who's serve it was) moot

:)
