Here are their names:
James Qiao est. Can Rating 3542
Filip Ilijevski -
Eugene Zhen Wang
Jian Fei Sun
Moxi Guo
Colin Greenidge
Scot (Yen-Chun) Liu
Iraj Golmohamadi

The open finals ended:
Eugene Wang Zhen 3 - 0
James Qiao 2 - 1
Jian Fei Sun 1 - 2
Louis Wong 0 - 3

Best match was between Sun & Qiao, followed by Qiao and Wong....both went 7 games.

Both Sun & Qiao were quite tired after their match - which made it quite difficult when they came across Wang Zhen. WZ ended up beating everyone quite comfortably.

Finals was a round robin between all 4 players.

Fun tournament to watch - CCTTA should be congratulated for running very good tournament.

Excellent photos Shakehander.  I'm sure the players are thrilled of these pix.

Anyone have closeup photos of the trophys ?  I did take a look & these were way better than those in Baltimore  LOL

So Eugene Wang is the Zhen Master of this tournament again.  Congrats Clap

If anyone has any video please post Smile.  Specially, the matches between Eugene Wang Vs James Qiao, and Jian Fei Sun Vs Louis Wong, I missed these 2 matches Cry.  I agree that after the match between Sun and Qiao (imo the best match of the tournement), they seem to not having anything left in the tank.  However, Eugene Wang seemed to play on another level Yesterday, so I don't think anyone can beat him on this day anyway.
BTW - Where is this James Qiao come from?  I have not heard of him before...  His RPB counter loop from way back is like watching Wang Hao himself.

Heard James Qiao - has moved to Toronto to work in Alex's training center - so perhaps Alex can give us more details.

Eugene ZW vs James Q - match wasn't very good as it appeared James Q pulled a back muscle - so he was just trying to do his best to hang on till the end of the match. He wasn't able hit any of those spectacular loops - he is able to hit.

Sun supporters were saying if Eugene and James played first - then Sun would have won because the other 2 would have been too tired. I am sure if James had any supporters they would said the same thing about James winning (I think he will have lot of supporters after yesterday).

In my opinion the tournament seeding was correct
1. Wang
2. Qiao
3. Sun

My low budget research dept says James Q came from the USA to TO.  Some of the American players on this board can offer more info.

I'm glad he did. It's exciting to see new talent with his skillset

James Qiao is from the Shandong Luneng Table Tennis Club in China. Alex-TT and Shandong Luneng Table Tennis Club have an agreement to become long-term partners and we have formed a close cooperation relationship between each other. In addition to sending the world top level players (Zhang Chao, Fang Bo, Tao Wehzhang, etc.) to represent Alex-TT in the 2011 NA Teams Championships in Baltimore, Shandong Luneng Club has also sent a high level player James Qiao to Alex-TT Training Center in Markham, Ontario as part of the exchange program. In the future Alex-TT will also send young students to Shandong Luneng club for short term or long term training. We will have more high level players with different playing style sent from China to Alex-TT Training Center to help our training. We believe this cooperation will bring significant benefits to the students at Alex-TT Training Center.

James was in Seattle in 2010 and he has returned Shandong Luneng club in China in Aug.2011. And then he was sent to Alex-TT by his club one week ago.

Alex,

Thanks for the update. Also congratulations on all the good work you are doing for TT in North America. Is James Qiao going to continue as a player (I believe he is only 21) or switch to coaching?

Thanks

We see James is currently providing assistance on coaching some kids who have telents at Alex Table Tennis Acadamy. He also spends some time to practice local top players at the club. It is really pleased to see what is happening in North America.

Are you planning on something similar for the 2011 US Open?

GTATT,

I was thinking once you start coaching - it would be very difficult to maintain the high level of play. Especially after seeing Sun Jian Fei playing very high level players.

Unless there are other top level players coaching and playing.

Regards
JRS

I'm pretty sure he is going to be at the Olympic Trials (Canadian) at CCTTA in Feb 2012. So I would assume he is eligible to play for Canada. I was told he's one of the 16 invited players.

Not sure about the above - he is not listed on the Canadian Olympic team at the CTTA site - so I am not sure if he will be there or not.

From the lists it doesn't look like it; it's strange he's on top but seems to have been lost in a shuffle, we'll see in Feb...

Possibly because Wang Zhen is yet to become Canadian citizen, possibly he is Canadian resident now but may be not a citizen yet.

Would he be able to represent Canada even if he was a Canadian citizen?  I thought the ITTF introduced a rule several years ago that prevented players aged 21 and over to represent another country if they moved.

He's not on any of the lists but if he gets an invitation to the NA qualifier (March) and wins he has a placement chance...that's how i'm reading it? I dunno i haven't looked at these things for awhile now...things are more complicated these days... LOL

If he was already a citizen, he would be on the squad list by virtue of his CTTA ranking, look at MoMo she won the PanAm tourney and that gets her in automatically.
