Wang Hao has developed a back problem that may have affected his performance.
It appears to me that the vid shows: - Younger players like Zhang Jike, Xu Xin and Zhou Yu share the same room. - Zhang Jike feels sorry for Xu Xin who didn't win in the trial because they are budy budy. - Zhang Jike always brings his private pillow wherever he goes because he has a spinal cord and neck pain problem. - Head coach addresses the team: Muscular/bodily wound is common among those players that participate in a lot of tournaments; therefore, you must take good care of your own health; sometimes focusing on fighting spirit is more important than focusing on local pain while playing; WLQ is a good example for the younger players to learn because of his fighting spirit; Xu Xin lost to Zhou Yu because Zhou Yu is more aggressive and Xu Xin is too conservative and fooling around too much at the beginning. Zhang Jike is tired after returning from oversea tournaments but should maintain a fighting spirit. The 2011 internal trial is a good opportunity for the players to challenge each other and his own limit. Each player has an opportunity to prove he is better and stronger than the others. My translation may not be 100% correct and complete due to my own limitation in understanding the Chinese language. If someone can come up with a better interpretation, please come forward and tell us more. Edited by wealthweb - 03/16/2011 at 2:37am |

After watching both the boys' and the girls' vids, it is quite interesting to see that during the tournaments, how all these Chinese players look so serious and insensitive as if they are all born with poker faces, militarily trained soldiers with killing machines.
But behind the scenes they are not any different than you and me - happy going ping pong players who sometimes act like kids with lots of happy faces, smiling and making jokes with one another. Gao Yan and Ding Ning are so humorous, lovely and playful that they do not look the same persons when they are fighting each other at the TT court. Edited by wealthweb - 03/16/2011 at 2:25am |

I have no idea what they're saying but I enjoyed the restaurant conversation between Liu Shiwen and Ding Ning. I guess DN didn't want LS to eat all the cookies?

It's easy for those two to be relaxed and joke around - they already have their tickets to Rotterdam and didn't even have to play in these Trials! Note that the video doesn't show much of Guo Yue, who probably didn't feel like smiling and laughing (poor girl has to play in Poland this week to earn her spot). |

Based on my hasty listen through and translation, I'm sure there's some small errors and I might be missing some details, but the general gist of the conversation goes: Ding Ning was joking around with Liu about if she keeps eating she won't be able to move around the next day, and how if she wins tomorrow DN would buy her a whole table of food. Then DN says don't worry, tonight I'll make sure "she" doesn't get any sleep. I'm assuming by "she" DN means Liu's next opponent? Liu of course takes it as a joke and tries to eat the cookie anyways and DN keeps making fun of her trying to eat and tells her to lose weight. Most of the conversation is DN being sarcastic which is why Liu keeps laughing at her suggestions. |

Wang Liqin and Malin are still there in the team as they have excellent fighting spirits for which Liu wants all others team to follow. These older players' never die attitude make them reliable and that's what others must follow if Liu were to choose them for Olympic as only with then, they will be guaranteed with gold medals. Not to mention these 2 old horses can still give these youngsters a fight. Both made it to the semis and one even final.

Amazing video - thanks for posting! It's really annoying though that CCTV5 has region locked its videos.
I'll try to provide a full translation when I have time. A few other highlights: - Wang Liqin replaces his rubbers in two days because they're worn out - LQL feels that Ma Lin is exaggerating his injury |

I saw that room with three beds and was thinking - wtf, this sucks. I can understand if Zhou Yu and Yan An have to be roomies but ZJK and XX have at least earned their own room. Think of all the snoring, body odor, funky sweaty clothes, and um... gastro-intestinal fumes being spread in the room by three people. Oh, and you always have one guy who likes to eat oranges in bed. Glad you got your vitamin C buddy but now the whole room smells. And, there's usually one guy who likes to smoke while using the toilet. So there's the mixed smell of crap and smoke. It doesn't look like XX and ZJK smoke but I bet some of the guys in the Chinese team do, even if it's in secret. In all fairness though, the guys and the ladies seemed happy even with roommates. Probably because they had to share one room back home with eight siblings so sharing a hotel room with two others is no biggie

Those players share a dorm room with someone since they were in the city/provincial team so they're used to it. The national team is run by the state so they don't have a choice anyway.

As a matter of fact ZJK does smoke - a forummer saw him and Chen Qi during a break in English Open schedule sneak outside and smoke. See "English Open 2011" thread... |

One of my best friends is a heavy smoker and he seems to not able to smell too well. Either that or he's extremely "odor" tolerant because of his smoking... (No, I did not "break wind" on purpose to test him... One time we were walking in Vegas in summer next to Caesar's Palace, and there was this monster sewage smell from underground, but he couldn't detect it.) |

Oh right. Then maybe they look so happy because Liu Guoliang at least put them in a hotel room instead of an Army barracks full of soldiers. The barracks has a lot more crap and cigarette smoke (if smoking is allowed in the Army). If not, just lots of crap and oranges.

Most definitely. I'll even bet an old sheet of Outlaw that he reads the newspaper while smoking and taking a crap. You need to be a multi-tasker if you want to be in the Chinese National TT Team.

This doesn't surprise me. A Chinese friend of mine told me years ago that Teng Yi and Jiang Jialiang (or maybe some other player of that era) came to L.A. for a tournament stop. He said they did a session at his club a day or so before the tournament and their session was fh counters, smoke, bh counters, smoke, a few footwork drills, smoke, practice matches, smoke... I think they've passed it on to the next generation. Maybe the rest of the world needs to take up smoking so they can keep up with Chinese TT
