I've taken alot of input on my thread regarding a setup for a novice modern defender, and am about to purchase my first non-premade setup from Cole's. This is what I'm looking at:
Dawei DW2 (ALL+) FH - Gambler Reflectoid (1.5mm) BH - Air UpUpUpUp ox (1.8mm ???) Handle: Straight Should I purchase sponge for the FH, it only comes with a factory 0.6 soft sponge, but shouldn't I have a sponge that is closer to 1.9mm? I still want to be able to loop with this rubber if need be incase that changes the thickness preference at all. Also there are two settings for the AirUpUpUp, one is UQ Softer/Slower the other is US Firmer/Reversal, what the hell does that mean? Thanks! Edited by backhand_crane - 04/25/2016 at 10:55pm |

it makes no sense to use a 1.8mm sponge under a long pip. Factory made is 0.6. I wouldn't go over 1.2

I used Air upupupup for 3 years. 0.5 or 0.6 mm are the best for defense and attack if your blade is fast (carbide). If your blade is slow, then you can try 1.0 mm. Otherwise it's so easy to push outside. This rubber is not good for loop. If you really want to loop, use Dawei 388D or 388D-1. I still suggest hit with medium force much more effective than loop. One more advantage for 388D or D1 is: away from table chop.

What weight do you consider it to be a slow blade? The one I'm looking at is 88g. |

I'm a penholder (flipping around) so my blades are lighter. They are in between 78 g to 85 g. IMO, Carbide (usually 2 thin layers, the rest are wood) are faster compare with good wood blade. Carbide are much faster compare with cheap wood blade. Some cheap wood blade are really heavy. For my level (medium), the blade and rubber combination is important. I spent lot's of $ for the "weapon".
So if the blade you want to order is wood, you can use 1.0 mm foam if you like. If it is wood/ carbide, use 0.5 mm (according to a China coach). If you order Air UPUPUPUP, better hit with medium force (more powerful than hit hard). Hit angle (your blade) IMO need 92º (no spin) to 95º (under-spin) Good luck!

Since I'm the one who mentioned this particular setup in another thread (I own exact copy) , let me point out a couple of things: * Typical modern defender will have LP on their BH and mostly will use them to receive serve, chop, push, block, and sometimes hit. Looping with LP (while possible) is an adventure, and it is next to impossible to generate massive topspin. So - best not to plan on looping with LPs for now. * Reflectoid is a slightly unusual rubber: good for blocking, pushing and chopping. Looping is possible, but it's not what it is designed for - it is mostly for defense, because of its dampening sponge. * If you never played with LP before - it takes time to learn how to play with them. * When you say that your current style is 'Modern defense' - what do you mean? Do you have someone in your office with a massive loop you need LP to defend against? Or are you trying to imitate a famous player, like Joo Se Hyuk or Gionis? As someone who switched to pips ~ a year ago with expectations of massive loop/chop rallies - what no one tells you is that at low levels no one really knows how to loop, so you are mostly stuck at the table pushing and blocking with LP, which is an art in itself (and Air UpUpUp is quite decent at - it produced really nasty floating balls when I used it for a short time). TLDR: LP goes on backhand, 0.6mm is fine. Reflectoid is mostly defensive in nature, if you like to be aggressive on FH, get something more lively.

That's right, I've never played with LP before. My only experience with pips are those found on pre-mades with zero sponge. So I consider myself mostly a defensive player because I rely on my very fast BH for the kill. I can return nice low and fast forehands but they are not consistent and I sometimes fall back with just blocking. I will chop hard with my BH when faced returning low lying backspin balls. Does that qualify or is my style some obsolete or incomplete variant? Also I'm 6'1" and need to make an effort to stay low to the ground and away from the table, as most of my errors are due to overshooting. I use a shakehand grip.
Hmmm yeah I should rethink the rubbers I'm getting. Given my heavy reliance on backhand for fast flicks, heavy chops and occasional blocks and my FH for moderate speed topspin returns and pushes, is this setup appropriate? Edited by backhand_crane - 04/25/2016 at 11:46pm |

Your blade selection is okay but I would personally get a different set of rubbers (from Cole):
FH: Inspirit Quattro UL 1.8 or 2008XP 1.8 Either one is spinny and has excellent control. 2008xp is like Sriver, do it all. IQUL has more power and more spin, but should be great for defense in 1.8, BH: 388D1 on a factory sponge, 0.6 This is do it all LP and (if I am not mistaken) is the most popular LP in China. Just my 2c.

There are a lot of links to videos of various age players playing a defensive style using different pips. The pips used are noted for reference. |
