I have trouble with forehand directional consistency. I came upon the Korean Butterfly instructional site and it says something like "Your elbow determines which way the ball moves. If you have trouble controlling its direction then there is a good chance your elbow is too close to your body. If you're trying to hit a crosscourt shot but lands in the middle or the backhand side of your opponent then either your elbow is too close to your body or your elbow is moving (pointing?) toward your opponent's backhand."

My Korean is rusty, so I may be translating it wrong but I get the part about elbow being too close to body. But I don't get the part about elbow's direction controlling the balls direction. Can anybody elaborate on this?

Keep your elbow down. hehe if your elbow goes up, you lose control and instead of going forwards, you go across your body.

The reason your ball is not going across court and hitting only the middle is because you are probably hitting the ball too late. If the ball lands short, step forward, if the ball is traveling long, don't stand too close to the table, turn your waist more and hit the ball at the peak keeping your elbow down.

Well that's my 2 cents hehe

Do you have the link to the Korean butterfly site?  I remember looking at it before but lost the link.  Thanks!

If you elbow is up, as Recanter said, your control is lessened and it means that you are tense and not relaxed!

Keep your elbow down.

Thanks for all your replies. I think I know what they mean now. I looked at myself in the mirror and since my elbow was too close to my body and also I was too tense my elbow was moving straight forward instead of moving diagonally which naturally happens when you relax your elbow and put a few inches of space between the elbow and the body.
