I think if you keep pounding something, it would get softer.  By that theory. are dead sponges spinnier?  the rubber wouldn't be b/c it will loose it's grip or tackyness.

a dead sponge is actually dry and becomes hard. in addition, the topsheet becomes very slick (dead rubber), so u can't generate much spin with that combination

Out of interest, would a dead rubber(anti-spin) not have better control on a soft sponge?

I think the dead rubber is not responsive to spin much.
