i actually havne't seen anyone who seals their 1-ply hinoki blade...
i think hinoki blade itself is strong enough...

Haha, sorry Thenam, you are missing one : me.
I seal all my blades including my single ply hinokis. I use wood varnish and coat it with a rag lightly. I don't know if this is actually not necessary but I do it to pacify my mind, thinking that my expensive blades are well protected against splintering. |

i've heard from pros that it's not good to seal hinoki because it changes the characteristic of the wood and the feel.

you don't need to seal hinoki, cypress or koto.
Limba is a top ply that for sure needs to be sealed,I would also seal Ayous wood

I fully agree with Alfie.
Don't seal a hinoki wood, you will change the blade characteristics. Hinoki doesn't splinter! |

I seal the sides with wood varnish too, and I do several coats to protect it. Perhaps I am not that sensitive, I am not complaining about my sealed hinoki (or is it because I seal it very lightly?)

Except I've seen hinoki carbons pull away from the carbon in patches.
If you're concerned about changing characteristics of the blade, a nice option is hairspray. Works really well too. I use it on my cheapest Kama blades that are only $10. |

I sealed both of my Butterfly Jonyer-H blades with sanding sealer. Both of them needed it too, as each of them had a few one to two inch grains pulled out after the first gluing.

I have a Gergely many years and the surface is perfect.
I switched to Gergely 21 because of the straight handle and the low weight. |

I believe there are some penhold single ply hinoki which are cheap (Butterfly Senkoh or Darker Speed 25), but I have not seen a cheap one in shake hand version.

for hinoki blades,
price determines the quality of the wood...
if you're looking for CHEAP, would be better to say with ply woods...

shakehand is much more versatile if u ask me, as others have said u can defend attack and do everything else, with penhold, ur pretty restricted to the fh and only relying on the fh, even ma lina dn wang hao rely heavily on the fh, but with shake, u can be 50 50 if u want to. i play 50 50, killer bh, and no one passes it to my bh, anyway, thats my 2 cents.

No, at least for me it does not mean anything. They should have good reason to change to shakehand, but I am enjoying penhold so I will stick to it.
