I checked out 2 dealers and couldn't find anything light. I have other blades which are all about 85 gr or lower (excluding Acoustic 90gr) so wondering whether I should buy one about 92-94 gr to use with Sriver-like weighted rubbers or keep searching/waiting.
So how heavy are your Korbel and complete setup? |

I own one, about 92-93 grams. With both rubbers, just add 84 gr more.
However, you can get a Korbel below 90 gr. Just ask the internet seller or stop by at tt store nearby.

Couldn't resist and ordered a 90 gr FL from iruiru. That was the lightest they had.

It's hard to believe how some of you guys get those. 82 gr korbels, 74 gr 1 ply hinokis :). You must be quite patient.

mmm does anyone know why they weight differently, or why they have an inconsistent mass? you'd figure they would weigh all the same if constructed by the same material (aside from handle).

@ dr loop..
This weight inconsistency applies to all other brands too. I've seen/felt Violins ranging from 79g to 90g, Acoustics ranging from 86g to 91g, Korbels ranging from 84g to 93g...Stiga blades are even more outrageously inconsistent, e.g. Clippers from 89g to 95g..etc etc... I think QA/QC don't really apply @ t/t blade manufacturing. Whatevr numbers those t/t blades makers/Co. claim, we can just throw those nos. outta the window!

My prev. Acoustic was 84 gr and current is 90. Previous Energy was 75 gr and current is 84. I've contacted several online dealers and the lightest Korbel I could find is 90 gr. Suzuki from iruiru said others in stock were about 94-95. I believe the inconsistency is just because of the wood density. Probably heavier samples are faster and stiffer. If you get a -say- 94 gr Stiga Energy (I know there many Energys above 90 gr) it'll probably feel quite different than the 80'ish ones. |

Lately I bought one Gergely and the seller let me take home 4 pcs to choose from. The lightest was 82 grams and the heaviest was 91 grams. I believe the weight range is a bit more than that.

Maybe it's a matter of drying time. Formely, manufacturers could afford letting woods dry longer than nowadays. Maybe due to today's high demand they do not have this opportunity any longer. Also some species are getting rarer, such as hinoki. Old trees been cut long ago. Been told older and dryer are lighters.

Yes you are right, it is a matter of drying time, but also every tree is differant, some have tighter grains. It all depends on where they are grown and for how long. It depends on how long the timber merchants have the timber on their racks, how long the manufacturer has it on his shelves. Some timbers vary a great deal from one batch to another, sometimes when i weigh the blades that come into stock, I find variances of up to 15 grams. Even I'm shocked sometimes. If you are after a certain weight, ask the supplier to check his stock, you might be lucky to get one close to what you like. |

Some people are weight sensitive for one reason or another. My reason for seeking light blade is arm pain.

I don't think that it's a matter of drying time.
The world famous old Stigas from the 60ies and early 70ies are *heavy* and I mean *heavy*. Some of these blades are so good that some people would pay serious money to get them. Stiga used much longer drying times than today back then. But the blades are still heavier than most blades today. Wood is a natural resource. You won't find 2 identical trees. Wood from one tree is not identical to other wood from the same tree. Blades are unique. If you have 10 blades of the same model, you'll have 10 totally different blades - and maybe one piece of magic that you should cherish for the rest of your tt career. Lighter doesn't mean better. Actually, very often the heavier blades have a much better feeling. Heavier always means faster. Lighter means slower. |

I just got off the phone with an international distributor. I have the guy weighing Nittaku Acoustics for me. He has four that he says look identical, but weigh-in at: 78, 80, 85, 91. Trees really are different! I found the weight variance between blades to be even more drastic with Stiga, which isn't surprising . . . less QA, more production. I have one Clipper OS that is 83gr and another that is 92. The difference is so much that I need different setups to compensate for the extra weight on one. Can you guess which I use the Long Pips OX on? LOL.
