Hi all,
I would like to seal my Darker Speed 90. My question is : Issit ok to use the Water base protector(lacquer) like from Xiom or Andro? Currently, Xiom and Andro has products for blade sealing...
I also like to know if it is necessary to seal the Darker Speed 90? Will it chip easily if I do not seal it? Will it have any adverse effect if I seal it with Xiom or Andro Water Base Protector?
Alright, thanks for advise..

Personally I don't trust water based material for sealing. I use polyurethane and I feel safe...
I seal all my blades and I have no complaint about performance of the blade |

I use Andro Free Seal. No problems whatsoever on 10+ blades.

Some people do but then it feels too slick. However I saw recommendations to do that with tung oil instead of poly... |

I seal all my blades with poly-U. There is a water based poly-U. Once the water based Poly is dry, it is water proof.
I do not seal the handles with Poly. Makes them feel slippery and they get wet when your hands sweat. |

Hi Flicker,
I don't have a Clipper. I am experimenting with things to seal the handles but have not found anything special yet. I have sealed blades with 1 to 10 coats of poly. Three is what I use the most. There is another LONG thread where Tommyzai and expound on our thoughts about sealing. Some of my blades have that "dipped in glass" look. To make it short, 3 coats will not affect fast blades much at all. Def blades will show a greater affect from sealing. Sealings benifits outweigh not sealing. One or two coats will not "ruin" any blade. |

The wood still lasts. It is not going to rot away or anything if you don't seal it. The only thing is that the blade surfaces might splinter overtime as you keep putting on and peeling off the rubbers. The handle will get dirty because of the sweat and dirt. That's all.

I sealed every blade I bought/sold with 2 layers of Free Seal with the exception of Acoustic whic was factory sealed nicely. BTW, as far as I know, hinoki has very little tendency to be problematic if you don't seal. Many other wood types are worse. |

It makes sense to seal the blade's edge (to prevent splintering if you use edge tape) but I don't seal the surface of 1-ply rackets.
BTW, I was looking for some polyurethane but they sell it for ~50 $/L here. Do you guys have to pay the same for your "Varathane" or similar products? |

I also find that rounding the edges (slightly) with sandpaper helps prevent the ding cracks on blades, especially 1-ply. Don't believe the hype about hinoki being so hard it doesn't need sealant. SEAL BABY SEAL!

I seal also the handles of my penhold and I don't feel that it is slippery, but I think on SH it will be slippery.

I had seal four of my blades and none of them fly off my hand yet. Actually i don't feel any slipery at all after 2 hours of continuous practice. The purpose of seal handle is keep it off from dirt and sweat and keep the beauty of the handle for life.
Seal the blade is a basis carpenter and not so difficult task. If you try to vanish a kitchen cabinet or table and that require more advance technic
To seal a blade only needs a few drop of Poly and you don't need to buy a litter. Just buy a little can and will be ok for 10 blades or more
I like water base Poly because it thin and you can completed 3 very thin layer and will not increasing any weight. The oil base is too thick and it will incease some weight after 3rd coat

That's what I use too. Minwax fast drying PolyU spray can. Very easy to apply. To be sure, you can practice on piece of crap wood first. I'm too lazy so only one thick layer for me. |

Tommy - Good point on rounding out the edge. In this case, I believe the edge of the Speed 90 is already rounded out pretty well. I think this is the blade that Mithrra is thinking of sealing. Cheers.

I used Minwax water base clear satin polyurethane. You could find it at any wood or hardware store.
I don't like spray bottle because it hard to get even or over coating.
I will post a picture of my tool after come home from work to night. |
