What blade would be economical and worthwhile to experiment with? I don't like the c-pen grip and I don't use RPB so I decided to try out j-pen and see if it is better

Yasaka Musashi, never tried it, but always wondered how it plays...  it's dirt cheap compared to other brands (40 vs 120+), and looks like it's got decent grain quality.

I would recommend single ply hinoki J-pen. You can choose from the low to the high price range. However if you want a good one and good quality/price ratio, you should go for Darker Speed 90.

So any single ply hinoki is pretty decent? Which ones are cheaper?

It depends how you want to play - close to the table  or mainly mid distance loops. If you have poor footwork then try a round head j-pen for little money like Senkoh 5. But if you prefer mid distance loops you'd better go for 1ply hinoki blade. The cheapest in this case would be some of the Butterfly's Senkoh blades and  Yasaka's Musashi/Yagyu.

Would you say if you don't use RPB jpen would be more preferable? Is the forehand easier due to its grip?

I don't like RPB at all. I prefer blocks and pushes over the table and fishes from mid/long distance. For me the traditional j-pen style is preferable. In my view  the only advantage of the RPB over the traditional is that you can execute very spinny loops which is difficult with the traditional penhold backhand.  And yes, the forehand is much easier.  Since I switched to j-pen my forehand  became much more consistent. The angle on the Cpen is so hard for me, very restricted. Is it just me or? I am hoping Jpen doesn't do that. I can't get my angle any lower

Maybe the blade needs a bit of sanding to accomodate your fingers ? Sand off the parts that hinders making proper angle.

I don't think that it is normal to be "restricted" in any grip. Can you post a picture of your grip? Or a video of you playing?
