I would prefer soft sponge rubbers.

Chinese rubbers doesn't work well with 1-plywood hinoki blade, it's because chinese rubbers is hard compared to german / japanese rubbers.

I agree that soft rubber will work better for 1-ply hinoki blade.

i've tried both the sriver and sriver el on my senkoh.  i like the el more - the softer rubber made a huge difference.  i'm thinking of trying a sriver  fx which is softer still.  what about focus 3?

I don' think Focus 3 is as soft as Sriver EL or Sriver FX though.

i've heard that it is - but i've never used it - just hearsay.  I have a pair of FXEL and 729Lightening - but i think they may not work well with the hinoki combo.

I tried playing with Hurricane 2 and 3, didn't work very well. Prefer softer sponges and not so tacky topsheets (at least my personal preference). Some of the rubbers I like :Cermet (which is my regular one for the last 5 years), Bryce FX, and Joola Mambo H.

Yeah, my H2 & H3 are hard. But my H3 Provincial is much softer, that's probably why it works for me on my 1 ply. But, preferences may differ from one to another.

if that's the case.... then what kind of blade is good for chinese rubber?

I think play style and personal preference matters a lot

basically... I feel that soft rubbers are better for looping...
hard rubbers are better for fast attack and good blocking

Joola Energy Xtra is very good on Hinoki 1ply.
Joola Green Energy, Sriver FX, Bryce FX, Bryce Speed FX (these medium soft rubbers) also work well on Hinoki 1 ply. 2.1mm works better than Max on Hinoki 1 ply.

The feel of a 1-ply hinoki blade is actually more on the softer side IMO, so if you're a looper, go for a medium hardness rubber... too soft and the whole thing will feel a little mushy, too hard and you don't get enough dwell time (plus you're masking the nice feel of the blade).

Chinese rubber comes in all kinds these days.. many are not longer like the traditional sticky and hard sponged.

As you say it depends a lot on the style you play...

I really disagree. I think Hurricane 3 and Skyline 3 do way better on single-ply hinoki than European tensor rubbers. The combined dwell time of the rubber and of the wood make it so that you can really pick up the ball and throw it where you want. Plus the short game is very good. I've tried Tenergy and Dignics on my Darker Speed 90 and it doesn't compare to the tacky chinese rubber.

From what I've seen lately H3 isn't nearly as tacky as it was in 2008

Unboosted (non-neo) H3 is pretty tacky, even after boosting it.
