    Posted: 08/02/2008 at 2:29am
I found an old racket that I had.  It's more than 10 years old.  The rubber is already dead.  It's a pre-assembled racket.  The Butterfly Biriba700.  It's been kept in a case.  Is it still possible to somehow remove the rubber from the blade?  If so, how?  Or, am I better off just getting a new blade + rubber?

Thanks~

recreational grade ones aren't usually meant for removing rubber, so they are always glued on super strong. And the fact that its old means you're just gonna have to muscle it, use acetone, and get ready to sand it cuz sponge bits are gonna be stuck on it pretttty well.

Just work at it, and dont be afraid. If you damage it, you damage it. But it should be fine, just do it to it lol

You can get it off with laquer thinner and a lot of muscle (rubbing with a rag).  I've done it with a couple of premades.  Takes a loooong time, but the blade will be in perfect shape.  However, in the end, I don't use either of them as they aren't that great a blade.

I guess I'm better off getting a new blade + rubber then.

I would say probably so, but if you are strapped for cash, it's worth a try.

I'd say you could rescue the blade but no way will the rubbers come off good enough to be used again. It is worth a try if you are just going to leave it sitting there unused otherwise.
Good luck

wow exact situation i was in a while ago, don't waste your time my friend, ripping off the rubber, than spending hours cutting the sponge off, than a few days sanding the bits, and your final product is a piece of sh*t

I just did this to try it out. There were two rec. grade rackets I had. one of them, there was no hope. The sponge wouldnt come off for ANYTHING. the other one was much older, and I used some acetone, and it was peeling, only a few little bits left. Took 5-10 min. to sand the blade, and I put an older sheet of Sriver EL on there, and some short pips on the back. Haven't played it yet, but it looks like it'll be fine.
