    Posted: 10/01/2008 at 2:41pm

Need to get know what blades excel at flat-hitting and strong drive strokes:

I know the same blades can be used for many different strokes as well (loops/blocks/etc, though very likely not as well) but I'd like to know which ones
are 'really' suited for flat-hits/drives.   I have found hard-feel blades
are better suited.

Ones I have tried which work quite well for this purpose:
 - Violin, Clipper and Cofferlait

What are some of the others ?

JUIC Kalinic All+ (you used to have this) is very good flat hitting blade, probably one of the best out there ...

Yeah, I didn't give Kalinic a fair chance due to lack of power :)  Thanks.

Balsa blades are wonderful for this purpose. If you are not limited to just wood, carbon blades like the Schlager is the best. edit: the new T11 is a cheap blade that you can try. It's carbon with balsa!

Wouldn't Balsa make it soft for hard hits, or does it not affect it ?

Schlager, that's something I didn't consider for this purpose..though carbon may take away some of the feel during the hits ..not sure about control also.  Food for thought neverthless...thanks.

I think balsa or anything hollow and soft is wrong !

Gergely the best I have tried for super flat shots
Black Devil Carbon very good too
Acoustic by far the most consistent I've ever tried.
Fast Carbon blades like sc, gergely pc etc
mazunov
7 ply wood blades
one ply hinoki
multiply hinoki
Thick balsa blades are also super be for hitting because they're extremely fast and springy

It depends what you prefer. I prefer consistency, feel and control to pure speed.

Tommy,
Your acoustic works very well for flat-hitting. You may need soft rubber like Joola Green energy, Tibhar Nimbus soft, Donic Platin. And Hinoki 5 or 7 ply works great too.

Thanks, Skyline.
That is useful info about classic Gergely.   Maybe worth a try.
How's it for over the table flips and quick attacks ?
Does the larger head-size slow things down?

I find Violin better than Acoustic for drive/hit type play.
Balsa - too springy and I think the soft feeling is not for me.
I prefer harder feel with good control/consistency and adequate speed (OFF).

hmm..just noticed that Gergely has Balsa center ply.
>>Cypress outer, Carbon secondary and Balsa center plies best suited for power shots.

I don't do much flips but for quick attacking it is very good. The headsize actually isn't large at all it's regular anyway it doesnt make things slower.
Gergely is built very consistent. But I had problems controlling it so I'm not really consistent with it. I might put Solcion on it and use it again.

About the violin/acoustic discussion. All the players here say the same as you. Some even claim that acoustic is not great for blocking and hitting at all. I don't agree with them. Acoustic works great for that maybe violin is better but I heard it's slower so I don't care. Also my acoustic is 96 gms maybe that has something to do with it too.

If you are concern about control then instead of balsa and carbon you can use 7-ply blades like the Darker 7p-2a or other Darker blades. Others may give you a second opinion on Darker.

For my flat hitting short pip game (802/2.0 on primary side +various OX on secondary side). I plan to go with the following six blades (not listed in any specific order). All will be straight handle and in the 82-85g range:

1. Borko
2. Nittaku Acoustic
3. Darker 7p-2a
4. Darker Shake Speed 90
5. Avalox 777
6. Stiga Clipper Wood

Am I missing any great flat hitting blades?

Never tried it personally, but isn't the BTY Sardius supposed to be very hard and fast... a "Sniper" blade?!

If this is correct what you write, this is a same/similar construction to the mentioned Hinoki Carbon: Balsa Core, Carbon secondary, Hinoki (=cypress) outer plies. Extremely springy, non-linear speed (explodes on fast drives), extremely hard touch, difficult to play topspin with because of the exploding speed. I had Bryce on Hinoki Carbon and could smash even chopped balls. But its hard to control. Maybe Gergely and Hinoki Carbon are pretty the similar.

Are you sure those 6 are good blades for flat hitting? I am not so sure.. At least the clipper definitely doesn't look good for flat hitting for me.

Then again.. with triple sealing, it might be good..
