I'm guessing frictionless LP were banned because it was the most powerful weapon of a junk player, though on this logic they'd want to ban all long pips, or at least the more reversing ones. And I do have to say that the "junk playing" style is bad for the sport. I don't want to label people, but when people adopt reversing long pips to simply block short balls and let the opponent pop one up so they can smash, that is bad for the sport and takes very little skill to execute this strategy. It's basically in the low competitive levels that this is the worst, under 1700 USATT rating.
When people first start competing, it will be these long pips that frustrate them. I know I may make enemies for saying this, but I believe I have some good points to think about the junk playing style. When players start competing and get frustrated by junk players, that really bugs them and they are discouraged from the sport. Since they haven't been playing for many years, they may actually stop playing. But the speed glue ban won't do much to make people leave the sport because speed glue is generally for the more advanced players, 1600 rating up to professional levels, and since they've already been playing for many years and love the sport, they're very unlikely to quit the way a newer player could. Also, I do think the speed glue ban (and all tuners/boosters as well) is good for getting more people to start playing competitively, not discouraging, because new players usually don't start off with speed glue. When they start playing some players who have incredible power due to speed glue, it's frustrating. And if they want to use speed glue, it's such a hassle, gluing before each session, continually buying glue and deteriorating the rubber quicker, etc. Adding hassles to the game in order to stay competitive is discouraging to lower level competition players. Last time I mentioned this "hassle", the rebuttal was "well training is also a hassle, everything is a hassle". But the difference is speed gluing is an enhancement of the equipment, whereas training is an enhancement of you, your skills. Speed glue is like steroids for your racket, except has been legal for years. The other rebuttal is that new technology in rackets, like tensors, is also like steroids, and makes a divide between people willing to spend money, and people not willing to. This is true, nevertheless, at least it's not a time hassle. So at least one road block is removed. There's no black and white line between new technologically enhanced equipment and speed glue, except for the time hassle. Ideally, all rubbers and blades cost the same, so it removes the price gap too, so everyone can simply pick the characteristics that fit their style, and go play. But of course that will never happen. That would be sport utopia though. In any case, I'm happy with the glue ban, as the hassle is exactly why I never started speed gluing. But I don't agree with the frictionless LP ban. |
