Sounds cool with me. Feel free to contact me for the "member of the public" judge. I do get airfare and per diem, right?

Nah, he had his chance to win in Bombay '51. Now let the man enjoy his retirement... or bitter misery depending on who you ask.

Hi guys and gals,
I would like to update you on this idea. We have just agreed with VOLKSWAGEN to introduce this type of promotional event in 2010. In fact it will take place in Guangzhou, China, in March 2010. We will have a formal event with the top 8 men and 8 women in the World (one player per association), plus this special exhibition event, which we call for the time being "3-M SPECTACULAR PAIRS" until we finer a better marketable name. If this is successful, then we will have a second such event (VW Cup) later in the year in another country (Singapore, Malaysia, Hong Kong or Germany). Of course it will be available live on itTV free of charge. I will keep you posted. |

Hi, Adham, Just have noticed an ITTF editor's announcement on the Volksvagen TableTennis Spectacle forthcoming on the next March. http://www.ittf.com/_front_page/ittf_full_story1.asp?ID=20505 So, my highest query is: will the participants for the Spectacle be entitled to some amount of scenic foolery, not exactly in llne with regular Rules of table tennis, e.g. hitting the ball with a boot's sole and other fancy "tricks"??? Thanks.

Watch it on itTV and you will find out. There will be two main events. One official and serious VW Cup with 8 men and 8 women and $250,000 prize Money. Then a separate event with 5 "pairs" called "Spectacular Pairs". You need to watch it to find out what it is. adham |

I don't like the idea of having this event in the manner of talent shows because it would take the attention from the existing sport.
On the other hand, I would certainly be interested in seeing how this event can be combined with a serious competition - something that will draw people to come in and see the real competition in action - something to fill the stands and bring live viewers. The question I have is where would this event be held? If you immediately are looking for success, you need to host it where sport popularity is present. Otherwise, you'll need to create popularity. One other thing is that if you get all top players to participate in the show, then it may not be so great - I mean really the pros don't have a problem keeping the ball on the table! Perhaps it would be a good idea to open this "show" up with a World Ranked top athletes and selected participants - like the Dancing with the stars. This would allow plain amateurs who aspire in sport develop awesome relationships with world class stars and also develop their skills. Plus, the top players would pass their experience on to the new generation. |

This event was held in Guangzhou China on 29-30 March 2010. It was a great success and enjoyed by all. there are many modifications and refinements needed, but overall it was very well accepted and we will have another edition in November in Germany this year.
You can watch most of it on itTV (VW Cup). Adham |

The women pair that played made me feel embarassed for the entire time I watched them. They were horrible. Saive and his brother on the other hand were fun to watch. My only concern with this event is that it has a limited life span. There is so much you can do within the rules. Smashing and jump the barrier, run around and swap sides. Bonus points for cartwheel chop ..After that there really isn't much that can be done. China vs the world was good because it was organised disorganised thing. Funny to watch all the pros having some fun like that. I think this will have a very limited life span if you don't get people in who can specialise in doing things we haven't seen before. Also I don't feel this event is coming at the right time. It is a bit of fun, but right now there is the whole issue of the 'basement PING PONG' stereotype. While it was pointed out that people don't confused slam-dunk basketball with regular basketball, people manage to think table tennis doesn't advance far past basement level. If these videos spread then all it will serve is to further stereotype table tennis into 'a bit of fun'. Good concept, wrong time. |
