Quarterfinals:
Ma Long beat Hao Shuai 3-2
Chen Qi beat Ma Lin 3-2
Zhang Jike beat Wang Liqin 3-0
Wang Hao beat Lei Zhenhua 3-1

Semis:
Ma Long beat Chen Qi
Zhang Jike beat Wang Hao

Finals:
Zhang Jike beat Ma long 3-2 (went to deuce in 5th game) to earn spot on 2010 WTTC team.

Ma Long looked like he was falling apart a bit under the pressure. With his #1 World ranking he should be a coach's pick for the team even if he does not win any of these trials, so he shouldn't really be feeling pressure to win.

yeah, i think this team trials, as the ones in the past, are just for show.

i think there's been a changing of the guard and the core team now will be xu, ma long and zhang.

the only people who are in question are hao shuai, wlq, ma lin and chen qi.

if memory serves me correctly, 5 players (3 + 2 "alternates") are allowed on the team.

now, i believe chen qi is out, period, so they have to choose between the remaining 3 i mentioned above.

i find it difficult to imagine they will choose hao above ma and wlq, but he did do well last month, so i'm not sure.  but, given that coach liu and cai zhenhua have already put out in the public that ma lin is in the doghouse (due to his marital problems), maybe he's the guy that won't make the final cut.

well, we'll find out soon enough, i guess...

No one is "out" since there'll be another tournament. And how are these trials just "for show"? you mean the results are fixed? no way.

Wang Hao is also "in the doghouse" now, LGL ripped him apart after his loss.

Zhang Jike was really happy when he won, so the results may be fixed?

oh, i forgot about wang hao (no wonder) and, yes, you're right--he IS in the doghouse and don't think it's just because he lost the other day.  they just don't like the fact that he and peng are screwing around like they are, and i honestly believe that they want him to lose, so they can make an example of him in front of everybody.

i can't see how he's gonna make the cut.  his mind is clearly not on the game and he is just not playing as well as he was this time last year.

anyhow, i do believe they already have in mind who the core team will be (ma long, xu, zhang) and the only thing that will change that is injury or     some sort of disciplinary problem.  so, you and i are just gonna have to "agree to disagree" on that point.

also, i think there's another reason why they would want ma long, xu and zhang--wlq and ma lin are pretty much automatic wins against the next 4 teams.

given what's happened in the past year, you have the sense that if china plays those 3 guys as their "core," that, somehow, the rest of the world has a chance to win or, at the very least, make it entertaining.  but, if the core team were, say, wlq, ma & ma, then nobody has a chance to win at all and they should just hand over the trophy to china up front and forget about boring everybody by playing out the matches.

based on a coupla statements LGL has made recently, i think they realize that they're even losing the chinese market.  well, nothing other than a little "uncertainty" is gonna reverse that.

Obviously, now that Xu and Zhang have won the tournaments they are on the team, but I don't think that was clear going into the trials. If Hao Shuai had won the first tournament (and that was quite possible), the "core team" could look quite different. Same if Ma Long had beaten Zhang Jike this week.

i don't generally make predictions, but i'm gonna say that the core team will be ma long, xu & zhang.  one of the "alternates" will be wlq, regardless of how he performs.  as far as i can see, the only question mark here is the 2nd "alternate" or "5th spot."

personally, i think ma lin would the be the best choice, but since he's in the doghouse, who knows?  wang hao is in the same situation, so maybe he's out, too.

so that leaves hao shuai (cuz in my mind, chen qi was never in).  i find it hard to fathom that they would choose hao shuai over ma lin or even wang hao, but they may feel like doing that just to make a point.  anyhow, i guess we'll find out soon enough...

Hahaha! Yeah, this "China has to dumb themselves down" is a pretty good theory.  Although it does have some precedent in the last WTTC and they sent their "second tier" teams for Mixed Doubles.  I read somewhere that Cai Zhenhua was really, really hoping some other country would whup their XD teams but "sadly", it didn't happen.

I think if they did this when Xu Xin and Zhang Jike were relatively unknown, I think it would have been more effective.  But right now, they are not really that inexperienced in the world stage.  Still, I think the Europeans have a slightly better chance, especially against Jike, rather than let's say Wang Hao or Ma Lin.  Like you wrote, maybe this is what China wants.
