ok, now, the show goes to austria, starting this wednesday.

mizutani will be there, but so will timo, so he'll really have his hands full, as if deuce and ad in the 7th wasn't "full" enough.

ovtcharov, however, has pulled out for some reason--maybe the stress of this whole doping episode has gotten to him and he needs a break.

also, i was looking at the player list and our own ADAM HUGH will be there representing the US of A.

let's see if he can get out of the qualis.

on the women's side, 2 top chinese (from the chinese nat'l team, that is) will show, LI XIAOXIA & GUO YUE.  on the men's side, china is sending playing their juniors again.

He's got a helluva lot more chance than the other US player that keeps pouring money into going to pro tour events only to lose every single game...even though Adam Hugh couldn't beat the college players around here...

y'know, that's right.

if i'm not mistaken, at the last pro tour event he played, he actually managed to get out of the qualis, but he drew some chinese player in the 1st round and got his butt royally kicked...

Well this year in the US open he made it out of the groups and lost to a Japanese player, the China open he beat a Chinese player playing for Austria and then lost to Lebesson from France.

As far as I know, USATT does not sponsor any of the players to go to the pro tour events. That is why Adam gets his chances because he picks up the expenses himself. Who else will be ready to do that?

To sum it all up, given the financial situation of USATT, it is simply not feasible to have the American players sponsored in to these events. And the Adams of this world will continue to benefit.

Huh?

I was refering to Wally Green in the lose every single game reference, he has been to tons of pro tour events and never won a single match and only won like a couple games against anyone I don't think, very pathetic waste of money on the individual's level.

Same thing applies to Wally too. Wally won't even appear on top 100 on US mens ranking. Yet, if he is ready to pay the bills to participate at the pro tour events, all powers to him. May be, the New Yorkers have a lot of extra cash to go to events just to lose matches.Confused

The good thing is that USATT's money is not being wasted for this.Big smile

wally is being sponsored by somebody, but i can't remember whom (or why).

usatt is not sponsoring anybody--they don't have the money to do that.

the problem with wally, with all due respect, is that, at his best, he's about a 2300-level player, but to play in the pro tour and get out of your group and get into the 1st round, you have to be, at the very least, 2600-level (unless you're playing at the junior or cadet level).

i'm well aware of the amount of non-native english speakers here on this site, but i had to say something, cuz, of all the mistakes they make, this is the one that irks me the most.

i originally was thinking to send a PM, but then i thought, y'know, if i do that, then the other non-native english speakers wouldn't get the benefit of that.

also, jimt, aren't you being just a bit hypocritical?  i recently wrote something in russian that was wrong and you didn't send me a PM.  so, in essence what you're saying is "don't do as i do, just do as i say."

Is there some kind of conspiracy, that top Chinese and top Germans are avoiding each other whenever it is possible?

i've been wondering about that myself.  but i think it's the chinese who's doing the "avoiding."  when you look at the pro tour standings, you see that none of the chinese will qualify this year for the grand finals.  i wonder if they are pissed about the rule changes, especially the new limit on the number of players allowed to play in the olympics and, in protest, they are boycotting the pro tour as they did (somewhat) in '05.  on the men's singles side, only then no. 21-ranked ma long qualified instead of his 6 higher-ranked teammates, so timo boll faced jean-michel saive in the final and, of course, beat him easily.

anyhow, timo (barring injury) will qualify again this year, which means he's on track to win another grand finals gold.

What kind of rule is there to qualify for pro-tour grand finals? The Chinese typically don't send people to small pro tour events where the prize money won't even cover the travel expense, unless they wanna give their junior players some international match experience. But I think they'll at least try to qualify their best players for the grand finals mostly just for the high prize money.

In terms of event importance, it's clearly Olympics > WTTC >> World cup > Asian games, pro tour finals etc. The Chinese are also have high regards for events taking place on their soil, which is why you can see all the best Chinese players in pro tour China open. This year's Asian Games is also in China (Guangzhou), so their A team will play in the team and singles/doubles events.
Ma Long is injured and just replaced by ZJK in the world cup, but he's still on the roster for Asian Games...

here's the rule and the pro tour standings of the top 75 players.  there are 2 more pro tour events left, the austrian open and the polish open, which means none of the top chinese will qualify as they are not entered into those events.  neither is joo se hyuk, so he won't qualify either.

timo boll is entered so he will qualify and be the top seed.

Qualification Criteria for the Pro Tour Grand Finals:

Doubles 8 pairs 4 Events (same players together)

^ Are you sure the top 5 Chinese won't qualify? It says "6 events OR 3 continents"

yes, buddy, i know it's hard to accept, but it's a done deal.  they've only played in europe and asia, so they must play 6 events and they won't make it.  they must be angry about something, as i said above...

vladi, on the other hand, will only play 3 events, but he will end up playing on 3 continents, so he will qualify.

now, i understand why he went to play in the moroccan open...

i'm not sure they are angry. I think this goes back to the chinese coach saying china is dominating everything and destroying the interest of the sport. Currently, they are not joining many events, and letting their B team youngsters play. All in all, they are not winning many events and giving other countries a shot. Which I think is a GOOD thing! It sometimes is boring watching an event without the top chinese, because you don't get to see the speed, explosiveness, and consistency. But for the future this is definitely a good thing.

I can't find Hugh in the Quali's so perhaps he did not make it there afterall, and I think Wally might be sponsored by EA Sports as he helped develop the video game....
