I found this while roaming around on the internet...
If anyone wants to give a more accurate translation that google that would be helpful...

A lot of this is about the players it sponsored, such as Cao Yanhua, Cai Zhenhua, Guo Yuehua, Tong Ling, Geng Lijuan, Qiao Hong, and of course Deng Yaping. It also seems that the 755 was one of their oldest rubbers (1975)

So 1972 for the original 729, amazing when you think about it, that rubber is still capable of some pretty good table tennis even up against the best rubbers of today. It's been nearly 40 years so the improvements have been pretty slow going. I'm fairly sure I was using 729-40 for the first year or two after the ball change

True, although the rubber made in those days may be nothing like the ones we have now, even if they bear the same name.Embarrassed

  • 1971: The Chinese table tennis team returned to the world of table tennis 4 years after the incident, only to painfully lose the men's singles and women's team gold due to outdated equipment. After the tournament, the Tianjin Rubber Industry Research Institute took on the burden of reasearching and developing new pips.

  • September of 1972 saw the birth of China's first adhesive product with a flawless combination of elasticity and grip, from the Tianjian Laboratory. The product was named "Friendship 729," and so began the glorious history of "729."

  • April of 1973: At the 32nd WTTC, Xi Enting and Hu Yulan of China recaptured the men's and women's singles titles, respectively, becoming the first to win the world championship with a 729 product.

  • 1975: The creator of the 729 technology, Li Shuzhou, developed the 755 long pimples, which was instrumental in the men's team victory at the 33rd WWTC.

  • 1979: The 729 brand became a registered trademark.

  • 1981: The Chinese team swept the 36th WWTC, finishing first in 7 categories and second in 5 singles categories, a miraculous feat in 55 years of table tennis. Most participating players used 729 products, thus spreading it's reputation throughout the world.

  • 1987: The Tianjin Industrial Rubber Research Institute used the 729 as its flagship line  to establish the Tianjin Golden Friend Rubber Development LLC.

  • 1997: The case of infringement of the Friendship 729 trademark by some Tianjin company was finally resolved, resulting in a solid foundation for the growth of 729 in the future.

  • 1999: .............rubbers made their market debut. 729-40 became the designated rubber of the Chinese National Team.

  • 2001: 729's modern manufacturing complex sprouted out of the grounds of Tianjin's Beishen Development. 729 became China's manufacturer of professional table tennis equipment.

  • 2003: 729 opened 7 sales offices throughout China and networked with thousands of retailers.

  • March 30th of 2005: The opening of 729 Industrial Park symbolized the status of 729 as the world's leading manufacturer of table tennis equipment.

  • January 2nd 2006: 729 Co. relocated to the 729 Industrial Park.

The rest is a list of Chinese table tennis players and their accomplishments with 729 at their side.

The full list of players

Xi Enting- '73 WTTC Men's Champion
Guo Yuehua- '81, '83 WTTC Men's Champion
Tong Ling- '81 WTTC Women's Champion
Geng Lijuan- '85 WTTC Doubles Champion, '87 Mixed Doubles Champion
Cai Zhenhua- '81 WTTC Doubles Champion, '85 Mixed Doubles Champion
Cao Yanhua- '83, '85 WTTC Women's Champion, '81 Doubles Champion, '85 Mixed Doubles Champion
Ni Xialian- '83 Mixed Doubles Champion
Deng Yaping- '91, '95, '97 WTTC Women's Champion, '89, '95, '97 Doubles Champion
Qiao Hong-  '89 WTTC Women's Champion, '89, '95 Doubles Champion

Because this is so tedious, the rest are Ding Song, Wang Nan, Liu Guoliang (debatable), Hu Yulan, Liang Geliang, Shi Zhihao, Yang Ying, Zhan Jian, and Hao Shuai (debatable)

One HUGE player was left out, and I was rather surprised. He Zhili also used 729 on both sides, and she was world champion.

If anyone knows what some people used I'd love to hear it. Now of course a lot of this is up for debate, as I know for a fact Cao Yanhua used DHS, for example. Of course Deng used the PF4 blade, 729FX, and 755. If anyone knows what Cai Zhenhua used I'd be very grateful, as he is a favorite player of mine.

Its pretty great that people can dominate with such a crappy rubber (in terms of playability).

Well, I've tried 729-FX on a friend's racket and think its really good for the 38mm ball.  But it does go to show you how far along rubbers have come...

You have to realize that this was 40 years ago. Table Tennis was completely different, where people often played with unmarked blades and rubbers. 729, DHS, Meteor, et al. revolutionized the game with having high quality standards and good rubbers. If you watch Deng Yaping for example, she used 755 long pips which have probably been around longer than most people on this site, and yet she became the best player in women's history. I guess she put that "crappy" rubber to use.

Well they aren't that crapy :) assuming the sheets now are still roughly the same. I was using 729 in the early 90s (no where near 1972 :P) and for me it was an upgrade over the European rubbers I had used until them. I've played with 729-FX as recently as last year and I'd be happy enough to play it in a tournament against any modern rubber, it's not as dynamic or fast but there's nothing actually wrong with it, still makes plenty of spin

This explains why you don't see that many 729 sponsored professionals. They have such a long history of making great products that they can maintain sales with their reputation.

Well the problem is really DHS. A lot of what 729 can be up for dispute. I know for a fact that Cao Yanhua, and Guo Yuehua were DHS users. DHS also sponsored players like Tong Ling (also supposedly sponsored by 729), and Jiang Jialiang. So its all kind of hard to say. But with the glue ban, and DHS further pushing the boundaries for what it means to have the best rubber, along with the introduction of foreign companies into china (BUTTERFLY), people fell out of love with companies like 729, Double Fish, and Meteor.

I think that DHS rubbers are overpriced compared to 729 although the quality is similar. I think 729 was the "original" chinese rubber manufacturer and DHS entered the industry later. According to the DHS website, they started making rubbers in 1979. Before that, they specialized in manufacturing balls and tables.

I recently heard that Li-ning bought DHS and was doing some research and this came up. It almost seems like DHS is a group of companies?

This probably deserves a new thread but I think both 729 and DHS have a long history worth discussing together.

It was the influx of money from him that has raised DHS's profile above the other companies that were until recently more famous, 729/Globe/Double Fish etc. I don't think any of them have a technical advantage over the other. One just has more money :). You could even say that on average the standard grade of 729 rubber is better than the standard grade of DHS rubber

Even though the website says DHS started making rubbers before 1979, I'm not so sure about that. I have a Double Happiness penhold with pips racket bought in the early/mid 70s. Back then you could buy one in those Chinese bookstores in chinatown

I've begun to discover more about the actual rubbers players used. Cai Zhenhua used RITC 804 Anti, Qiao Hong used RITC 2000 Tackspeed, and Chen Longcan used 802 (though i have also heard he used globe 889)
