I played it with T05/Pogo OX on a friends blade and it had a very good feel, decent speed and loads of control. It reminded me of Korbel in terms of speed and control. The one I played with felt relatively light. Should be a good blade for someone who likes to play a more controlled oriented with great looping capabilities.

I was interested in this blade but if the speed ratings are accurate it would be on the fast side for chopping.

Yes its a bit faster than korbel, but still retain the control. Imagine korbel is your chrysler minivan, and the w5 is the bmw X6.  LOL

imo, not enough dwell.  It may be possible to compensate for it with soft-rubbers,
but I didn't like primarily because of that reason.

whoops, just realized it was the W7 I'd tried, not W5.  So, scratch what I said.

"Yes its a all around blade, solid and  not very fast with good control." Eh.. nope:)

I read some say is overprice, well I do not think so after having played it.

Good dwelltime, high throw, good speed.

Allwood blade with only slight vibration, not too stiff.

Comparable to Butterfly Petre Korbel, Nittaku Accoustic, Donic Waldner Senso (Ultra)Carbon, Butterfly Timo Boll Forte, Andro Kinetic Supreme Kiso Hinoki Off-.

I would say its just about Off in speed. Ideal for looping, backhand sidespin flick vs any kind of backspin. Nice touch and feel for short push. Nice for blocking. Beside the andro blade which is a bit slower, it is the one who can do it all, but is the one with most control. The Forte lacks control especialy in short push. Accoustic , Korbel, the Waldner blades lack only a little behind with control. The Waldner Ultra is a tiny bit faster and is stiffer.

The W5 is imo a cant go wrong blade, even players who like carbon blades more, will like this one, cause it has low vibrations, carbonlike but still gives feedback and better feel. And allwood fans wil still like it as it still has vibrations and doesnt feel dead.

After having tested about 10 blades this is my weapon of choice, both waldners 2nd and very close behind the Korbel and accoustic.

My playstyle: Agressive attacker close to table and half distance, like to loop and backhand sidespinflick and short service. I attack any long service, no matter the spin, return short service short to either attack the long return or backhandsidespin flick the short 4th ball. I block topspins close to table or loop them back from half distance.

For this kind of playing I found no better blade.

Rubbery I play Tenergy 05 2.2 mm on both sides, sometimes Calibra LT 2.1 mm

I have played with the W5 for quite some time, but it's not a special blade. It's not an off blade and i didn't like the feeling either. If you want a 5-ply wood blade i would go for the Nittaku Acoustic. I like it way more than the W5 in both speed, control and feeling.

I want to resurrect this thread... since im rather curious about the TB W5.

Has anyone tried it recently?

How is it compared to a Korbel and TB ALC? And does anyone know the wood composition of it?

I'm very much in love with TB ALC handle design but want to give all wood a shot.

I know out of the pros, Smirnov uses the W7 which is the 7ply version.

no pt in w5. it sells pretty badly in general considering there's better options in its range. w7 is a very good all wood blade in the series though

Read that its similar to Clipper but top ply is Koto.

(Koto - ayous - ayous - ayous - ayous - ayous - koto)

looks abit thick and heavy :(

that's why im wondering if W5 is similar... I just cant find anywhere the wood construction.

I've been playing with Maze Performance on and off for about 7 yrs. Great blade, mostly unknown in N America. Thicker five ply, limba outer, slightly stiffer than other five plies, relatively soft feel. Shines on blocking and hitting. Looping is good too but not a flexy blade. I love it for short pips hitting. Not many vibrations either.

Oh, and it's not head heavy -- nice balance and thicker handle, like Boll ALC.

As for the W5, seems like too much for what you get. The Maze P is about $60, last I checked.
