The vast majority of players will never hit 2400.. not even 2300.
Young players with a coach, talent, athletic ability and lots of time to train can achieve 2300 in about 3 - 4 years of intensive training. 2400 in probably 4 - 6 years or so.. However, it all depends on the conditions, quality of coach, talent, time spent on training etc.. You can't make blanket statements regarding that.. I'm a unlikely 2300 player. Not really athletic, 40 years old and I play 1 - 2 times per week for an hour or 2. It can be done but the common way to get to that level is hard training, a good coach and talent.

If you have a good coach and good ability, 1500 is reachable in 1 year. Most take longer.

You can reach 1500 within 2 years very comfortably if you have some kind of natural ability (even if you are average) and someone to show you how to play. Anyone with average intelligence and half decent physical condition should have no problems reaching 2000 US at some stage. One you go above 2200 you start to either need to be exceptionally intelligent or at least have had a lot of quality coaching, either or, preferably both

It depends on so many different factors.. *) what is the level of player available for you to play with *) do you have a quality coach *) How many hours per week are you able/willing to practice 1500 is NOT difficult to achieve.. With talent, a good coach and good players to play with, it can be done in 1 - 2 years. Very good basement players top out at around 1300 level..

Be careful, if a coach is not "good", he can teach bad habits that will slow you down.

You should not worry about your level. If you want to be 2000 that bad it will come, just be patient. Do not compare yourself to others, just train and play tournaments.
As for coaching, I've noticed that you are from St. Paul. There is a large club in Rochester, MN (RTTC) that might be worth a try. There are quite a few good players there (USATT 2000+) maybe you can ask one of them for coaching, or a game. There is also a junior that plays at that club, Michael Tran, barely 9 years old (1891), but very good. Hopefully this helps.

Caution:
If you don't have a coach and spend much of your time practicing "the wrong things" or simply playing games, it will slow your development considerably. I speak from experience, having learned several different FH and BH strokes from different players without successfully identifying the common pieces that allow them to be effective (footwork, positioning). |

it doesnt matter if you are able to play 5 hours daily every day of the week. what really matters is the quality of that time and how wisely you take it.

Are you playing at a club with a lot of players? You will find it hard to crack 1700 if you don't know how to play a variety of styles.

I have been playing for a long time but just for fun . I don't have a USATT rating but most of the players i play against are around 1700 so my rating is somewhere around there. We have 2200+ players and i am not even close to their level. I think with coaching you can hit 1500-1700 in a year or 2 easily if you have the basics down already. The one thing you really need which i feel is overlooked is highly ranked opponents . You can practice with a coach all you want, doing drills and play with basement buddies but if you cant practice against players above your rating it will be hard to get where you want to be at. steel sharpens steel. Get a coach with a 2000+ USATT rating, try to find a large club since it will have more players over 1500 likely, possibly get a robot (good robot) if you have a table and room at home and try to play with the highest ranked opponents you can. 2400 is a lofty goal honestly all the player i know that are over 2200 were not born in the US they were trained and played over seas since they were small TT is taken a LOT more seriously outside the US. If you are a looper it might not be possible unless you are very young . Good Luck!

Your stream of questions (some of them look really strange as in "can I become a four-star general in the next 5 years") suggests that you care more about hitting 1500 postings than 1500 ratings. I would advise spending more time practicing than posting ... then we can talk in a few months' time. |

This is like the best rating in USATT a player in the US can achieve... According to the USATT ratings page, the best player (Zhou Xin) has a rating of 2752! I wouldn't dare dream of getting something even remotely close to that rating. But your not me, so you can do what you want. I would focus only on becoming better, not worrying about ratings like some top players who will even put off matches to preserve their Oh-So-Precious rating. |

I missed your earlier post shown above.
Some foreign players (from China), got USATT's ratings of 2900+, they rarely come here to play.
Don't know if any foreign players got 3000+ rating here or not. (There may be some, but I don't know.)
So, 2750 indicated in the previous post, was not your dream, your dream is 3000+. Edited by skip3119 - 01/02/2012 at 7:52pm |
