Tan is a great player, especially because he is barely 5 feet tall. He is incredibly quick and gets a good amount of power despite his tiny size. His serves are illegal but I think he deserved 2nd place. Him and boll had a good match.

Not withstanding Timo's winning the championship and not withstanding his brilliant closing point against Garcina, this match may have been as important as either of those. Crisan seems to give Timo fits every time they play so winning this match is a great achievement all in itself.

I know, i kid :) Let's have it, by all means. I'm not kidding about the nature of the game tho. Great snakes, that was boring! But they can't be blamed. When two women defenders face off, physiology is just a limiting factor as far as an entertaining match is concerned. Chen Weixing vs Joo see hyuk is always entertaining, despite both being defensive. Does anyone remember female chop vs chop games in the glue era? Was it faster?

I don't think those guys are bothered by illegal serves, though. Also, if they're not called, they are legal, so in ITTF circles that amount of hiding is generally deemed acceptable. I have never once seen Tan called for an illegal serve. Or Maze. I am glad. Let them play. |

I just went back and watched this carefully. Steger was getting killed because Tan was attacking his middle and driving him back. He had no answer. Tan was actually winning lots of points on Steger's serve that way. There were a couple where on returns of serve Tan was able to hit the ball into Stegers' belly! Steger was getting frustrated. In the third game Steger complained about hidden serves, but up until that point, at least for the points shown on the video, he hadn't really had problems getting beaten on third balls or even fifth balls. Steger was actually getting well into the point before Tan would back him off the table by quick angles and deceptive shots right at his body or at extreme angles By the time he complained about serves to the umpire he was totally frustrated about how things were going in general, and then he did miss a couple. By that point, the match was pretty much over. I don't think Tan's serves were more hidden than Steger's. Actually compared to most ITTF matches, the number of points won on third balls was about normal. Styles make fights as they say, and Tan's is a big problem for Steger. |

I also think that if you carefully compare their serves, Steger's were about the same (in terms of visibility to the opponent) as Tan's. He just doesn't see his serves from other guy's POV so he thinks he is correct and the opponent isn't.

Not to circle jerk, but that is almost the exact conclusion I came to. Tan played quite brilliantly, IMO. Some of his serves looked "borderline", but no more than anyone else in any match I've watched... and even then it could've been a deceptive camera angle. Tan played almost compulsively into Steger's body and Steger simply didn't know how to deal with it. He was obviously perplexed and frustrated and didn't know what to do with his anger so he started picking on Tan's serves based on one successful third ball attack. One of my training partner's plays to the body a lot and it gives me nightmares. Of course, as soon as I get the timing down and start stepping around, he starts going wide to my forehand. Then I'm screwed because he knows he's in my head and I have no idea where he's gonna go next. I'm not even disappointed with Steger's reaction, even though I think he was off base complaining about Tan's serves. There are a lot of ways to lose but not feel awkward about it. Constantly getting forehands crammed into your gut, forcing you to feel like you're a T-Rex trying to play table tennis is not a dignified or enjoyable way to lose a point. |

This is not the first time Steger gets frustrated when he feels he is losing the battle. If he could harness that anger and not spend the energy berating himself or the opponent, he could be an even better player.

I always like how Tan plays. I watched him beat Samsonov at one of the Olympic trial and was amazed how quick he is. I kinda wanted to play like him but then figure out that he has pip on his backhand (Good excuse, I know)
Anyway, regarding Tan's serves, to me, it's clearly that most of them are illegal serves but to the umpire/referee, I don't think it is because of the line of sight. I'm sure the umpire/referee saw clearly that Tan removed his non-playing hand and they also clearly saw the bat touched the ball. But to Steger, he couldn't see anything. I believe that we will need a third referee standing behind the receiver to determine if the serve is illegal or not . But again, it's up to ITTF to figure it out how to enforce this kind of illegal serves controversies.

TAN played an amazing tournament. It's the first time i've seen him play in person and he seems more energetic than on screen.
Lots of Steger's serves were clearly illegal. This was taken later in the game and he's hitting the ball at this moment or a fraction of a second later. (His serves got more blatantly illegal as time progressed, maybe because of frustration) Edited by zrrbiteDK - 10/22/2012 at 2:19pm |
