It's all over as Wang won game five 11-6.  Exhilirating match.

Too bad that Germany ended up in China's half of the draw...

that was the point of the match, no, of the tournament, no, of the whole damn year!!

for any of you kiddies out there who don't quite understand why wang liqin is no. 1 in the world, take a look at that point and you'll see why!!

that point broke boll's back!! he had a chance to win until then...

wonder what the coaches told boll in the time-out??

Just as in the China-Germany men's semifinal, one of the mainland China players finally lost a match in the women's final (close last game!):

ZHANG Yining (CHN) 11 11 11 3
LIN Ling (HKG) 4 9 6 0
ZHANG Yining
GUO Yue (CHN) 8 11 9 20 1
TIE Yana (HKG) 11 9 11 22 3
TIE Yana

BTW, it appears that there won't be third place matches (i.e., for both men and women, the two losing semifinalists will get bronze medals).

Women's Final

China beat Hong Kong 3-1

ZHANG Yining (CHN) 11 11 11 3
LIN Ling (HKG) 4 9 6 0
ZHANG Yining
GUO Yue (CHN) 8 11 9 20 1
TIE Yana (HKG) 11 9 11 22 3
TIE Yana
WANG Nan (CHN) 7 12 12 11 11 3
LAU Sui Fei (HKG) 11 14 10 8 3 2
WANG Nan
ZHANG Yining (CHN) 11 11 11 3
TIE Yana (HKG) 8 3 9 0
ZHANG Yining

Who knows what would have happened if Wang Nan hadn't come back to win that third match.  Too bad that giant killer Jiang Huajun didn't play in Bremen.

PLAYER DIARY > Sunday 30th April 2006 Timo Boll

Last night after the victory over Russia I went and ordered a pizza. I have bad memories of the last time I ordered a pizza before a big match; I had a pizza in Shanghai last year before the Men’s Doubles final at the World Championships, the next day I felt really ill and we lost!

Christian also had a pizza; I decided to have a pizza because I wanted to end the bad omen.

Today I had a massage for about an hour and a half; our physiotherapist massaged my feet, legs, arms, back; I think only my head was spared; other members of the team wanted to be treated as well.

Last night I was watched boxing on television, it was so boring I fell asleep; usually I like to watch boxing but yesterday was not good. However, I did sleep well.

Today I woke up at about 8.00am, I felt fine, I had pineapple and cake for breakfast; I don’t eat much in a morning. After a shower I went to the practice hall, we went at about 10.45; I went with my team mates. I know the procedure well, at ITTF Pro Tour tournaments we start at 1.00pm with the finals programme. I practised with Christian till 12.15pm.

It was incredible when I entered the main hall, I was so impressed. I got goose bumps, over ten thousand people, clapping and shouting my name; this influenced me in my first match. I felt a pain in my stomach, I was so tense. However, I managed to turn the match around.

Christian lost to Wang Liqin after he’d had several game balls and Zoltan did his best, he played the first attack very aggressively but without success.

Against Wang Liqin, it was a really close race. I was leading 5-3 in the fifth, Liu Guoliang called `Time Out’, I don’t what he said but whatever it was it worked. Suddenly I was 5-10 down!

Wang Liqin played very well indeed and he had more stamina than me. I thought he was in good condition, he was very athletic today. I’m disappointed I lost and I’m angry with myself because the crowd supported so well.

I wanted to get away from the hall as soon as possible; I didn’t want to watch Korea and Hong Kong.

Tonight we are all going out with girl friends and wives; we’ll all go for a meal. Deli has been here since Tuesday and I’ve not really seen her, I’ve just seen her briefly in the hall, otherwise it’s been phone calls. It’s just like being away in another country!

Tonight we’ll celebrate till late and tomorrow, well I think China for the title.

No, that was the lineup that was announced prior to the start of their round robin group match.  As mentioned already, there are no third place matches.  If there were, the German men's team would be playing Hong Kong and the Belarus women's team would play Japan.

BTW, Austria finished in 8th place (both men and women).
