    Posted: 02/04/2014 at 1:31pm
Hi all,
I am trying to get back into TT.  I know one of my fundamental issues is not bending enough and not having a wide enough stance.  I'm wondering if anyone has any advice on how to improve in this area with a focus on building up strength/stamina to be able to maintain this posture?

I have a couple things working against me right now - my age (47) and the fact I am out of shape.  I'm 6'2" and while I have always tried to play with a good leg bend I know I'm not anywhere close to what I see the pro's do who are my height.  Are there any good exercises that can build up this leg strength?  Any good playing tips for knowing that you have the proper stance?

Thanks!

To build up your leg strength, try doing the modified horse stance exercise.  Start with 1 minute and work your way up to 15 minutes.  Check out the video at the 2 minute mark where Ariel Hsing is doing something similar.

squats will help. also, when bending your knees, lean forward as not to put too much strain on your thigh muscles. this is the opposite of having bent knees and maintaining a straight upper body. your head should be more forward than your foot

what is the style you are looking to play?  You should check out videos of Samsonov.  IMO, he has good footwork for a tall guy.  He moves well around the court because he has a well balanced stance.  He always keeps his knees bent at all times with a few exceptions when he is only playing around.

GMan - I take it is the part where she is leaning with her back against the wall and sitting on a cooler and then the cooler is taken away(?)  I've never seen anything like that and will have to check it out.

Yogi - good points to remember on forward leaning.  I figured squats were a recommended exercise.  I'd have to be careful though as I'm not at a gym.

O! - Samsonov is certainly a good role model to follow - tall guy with great mobility.  Or someone like Persson.  I try to play close to mid from the table and FH looper but really I'm just thinking more in general on how to make a point to widen/lower my stance.  Bottom line - I gotta get in shape to have any chance to returning to TT and playing decent.

Thanks all :-)

As important is to get your foot speed up. As you get older the maxim, use it or lose it,becomes more relevant. Google any agility training video, they are all relevant.
Or for more fun training, simply try to dance like these guys

I normally tell people to make sure their knees are bent, but there are those I've seen who can play fine without much bending at high level of play.  What I do notice is that these players tend to favor blocking close to the table and playing some loops from mid distance.

GMan4911, Thanks! This is one great, positive, and nice video clip about TT in the country. Finally something well done in that segment... Of course, the wall support squat drill by Ariel is fun to watch, too.
