is this for jeans ?
just jokes straight better in theory because it should be easier to turn (twiddle) but it's more important to learn how to twiddle and to use it in games and you can do that with most handles

ST is also better for cpen.
You can sell it easier away... P.S. Timo Boll and many German Off players use ST. |

Preference also changes over time.
I used to love FL handle, until one day I discovered ST. Playing ST for quite some time, and then I stop playing for almost two years. Now, when I occasionally play, I start with ST but somehow when I switch to FL, it feels much better. |

ST handles are definitely better than FL for twiddling with.
FL gives me a sense of security when swinging hard on the FH side. I feel (subconsciously, stupidly) that ST handles will fly right out of my hand. Nonsense, I know, but... My preference is conical, but they are rare. |

This was a great signature until I realised it was overrated.

Fiction. It's not true that grip choice is determined by style - it's really a matter of personal preference and whether you prefer a uniform feel across the handle or you prefer a wider base in your palm. Some styles might be enabled by straignt grips but even this is not 100% true or clear when matched up against personal preferences. |

Fiction - straight can be used for Offensive or defensive play.
FL - mostly offensive players I would think as not too many defenders use flared. Anatomic - not a big a fan Conic - love it - feels very much like straight but not too popular Handle of choice: ST

i've always used or sought straight whenever possible
there were several blades which were only available as flares, so i've had those too..... yasaka 6X (late 70s?) butterfly gergely carbon (80s) butterfly power drive (although, i acquired a 'power smash' which had a straight handle) had a butterfly keyshot that had a big thick flare handle, was available on ST, but didn't get it on that one :)

my power drive(s) - were all the heavy shellacked handles with the adhesive sticker that came off. since i like straight handles, i eventually shaved off the flare, so the one and only power drive i still have - has been modified - it's more like a modified conical/straight grip, now
i had a newer generation power drive also - the same one shown in the pic...no idea where it went i do not have the 6X any more that is long gone..... unfortunately, but that did have a large sabre like flared handle, i remember.....had both the yasaka leopard and cougar (3 ply and one ply) with straight handles too (long gone) another one ply racket back then i had also was a butterfly tamaropa, i think that was a 1 ply cypress or hinoki blade (with a straight handle) i had so many blades, but don't know where they are, i either gave them to students, sold them, or traded them i suppose :)

My favorite handle design is conical, but they have been mostly phased out. I like the fact that they are straight, but angle out. I don't like ST that are like a baseball bat (Clipper), and I don't like FL in general. I feel trapped by the hook at the end. The squarish handles seem like the best compromise, i.e., most Butterfly blades. The Nexy Tamars have nice handles for me . . . slightly more rectangular.

In the 80's the BTY Power Drive reined supreme in the USA for offensive. First series where heavy and only came with FL Grip. Next series had a smaller head size and 3 handle types. The New BTY Power Drive II feels nothing like the original. I owned a Yasaka Technique blade and wonder what ever happened to it. Back in the day BTY offered more handle choices on the Power Drive and Primorac, Korbel and others. The best Conic was BTY Tarles.

As a general rule, I dislike flared handles: the bit I want to feel most is where the first and second fingers work together with the thumb. Consequently my strong preference has been for straight handles. Until now...
Tiger Lily is a wonderful compromise between straight and anatomic, crafted masterfully by Ross Leidy. The grip gives a very secure sense of contact exactly where I want it. My hand can now relax, with the "pinch" holding everything together. Twiddle? It's possible, and for a skilled practitioner I imagine the shape would not pose any problems. The bonus would be that an asymmetric design makes it very obvious which side is up and which is down. |
