So that China can only win one medal in the event and there is no all-Chinese final. |

On England sweeping the mixed doubles medals - that was interesting, but I guess it makes more sense given they have 3 good teams. It definitely starts with the Drinkhalls.

I always wonder why olympic removed doubles event and included team event which definitely gives advantages to the stronger country. From WTTC 2013, we sees examples. Well done Singapore and England.

Liam won three medals at these Games; i.e. two Silvers and one Bronze.
He won the Bronze medal in the Men's singles by beating Sharath Kamal Achanta 4-2. Prior to that match; he also gave a good account of himself in the semi-final of the Men's singles against Gao Ning. He lead 3-2 after 5 games; however, Gao Ning showed why he is such a high ranking player, by raising his game and winning the remaining two games and the match. Liam won his silver medals in the Men's team event and the Mixed Doubles with Tin Tin Ho. In the Mixed Doubles semi-final; Liam and Tin Tin Ho pulled off one the big upsets of these Commonwealth Games, by beating the top seeds Zhan Jian and Feng Tianwei 3-2. They were worthy winners on the day. Unfortunately for Liam and Tin Tin; their met their match in the final and lost 3-2 to Paul and Joanna Drinkhall. The other English Mixed Doubles pairing of Danny Reed and Kelly Sibley, also caused an upset of their own; by beating the top seeds Zhan Jian and Feng Tianwei 3-2 in the Bronze medal match. That was a match that was interesting to watch. I don't think anybody would have predicted England winning all of the Mixed Doubles medals before the tournament and one of the commentators made the point that a Singaporean coach had mentioned in an interview, that the English had practiced mixed doubles; whereas his players hadn't. You get the feeling that Singapore will be better prepared for the mixed doubles at the next Commonwealth Games in 2018. |

Bronze or silver? Oh, silver - now I see that he was on the same half as Gao Ning - how did that happen? Kamal Achanta was higher rated? Edited by NextLevel - 08/03/2014 at 11:08pm |

Liam picked up the bronze. Really nervous stuff from both players, but Pitchfork does it. Mega.
He's using the Zhang Jike Blue Dragon now... |

This was a great signature until I realised it was overrated.

Gao Ning won 10:6 in the 7th. Nothing spectacular, just good solid steady play from Gao Ning.

Kamal Achanta seriously underperformed in at least two matches. Cost India quite a bit... But who cares? I am not complaining. My inestimable respect for Quadri Aruna has doubled - he guaranteed this medal back in April this year and was even more confident after the Spanish Open.

Now it has to be Pitchford vs Desai (10+ match points)
Drinkhall really let himself down in the doubles, playing a behind the back trick shot (and missing) at deuce and 2 games up. Baggaley did his best to carry him but they lost. Just as well Pitchford overcame his nerves against Desai, because Achanta would probably have dealt with Baggaley. Still England through to the final. I wonder will cookie drop Drinkhall? |

Yes, Segun played very well against Gao - he looked like he could pull it off till the very last moment.

Well, dreams could not come true, but that was a spirited performance. Segun was so close in that first match and gave it all he had.

The Team format is same as for Olympics. 5 matches 3 players each side. No player can participate in more than 2 matches. At the the start of the match 1 doubles player is nominated. Then after first two singles, coach decides who will join the doubles. The next two singles are made up of the players left who have not already played twice.

I sometimes used Expat Shield on my last computer but decided not to use it on this one because of the way it behaved and concerns about how secure it was.
Nigeria did manage to beat Australia 3-2 (the matchup was a bit of a tragic one for me because I love Nigeria and I like William Henzell, so it was annoying but good to see William Henzell won his matches). I don't understand though how the team pairings worked out that the Nigerian singles #1 (Aruna) didn't face Henzell, but it definitely favored Nigeria, though I doubt that Powell would have been able to handle Toriola if it came to that. Singapore, Gold, India, Silver and I think Nigeria has a chance against either England or Wales for the Bronze.
