How many of these participants are truly student-athletes?
Last time out, wasn't it 2013? Xu Xin won...

Well, Attacker/Defender pairs seem not to work very well (at least for China, the all-Japan WD final in the Korea Open was tight and nice to watch). And more generally, China seems to be not so good in mixed doubles. They often lose early in competitions (maybe they don't care...). Edited by john18 - 07/08/2015 at 3:36am |

So is the Universiade for university students or just any professional player roughly in the university-student age range?

Not for real full-time student-athletes who are pursuing some kind of academic degree. Do not fool yourself. It's stacked in favor of full-time professional athletes, who can be affiliated with some university perhaps just for this purpose.

Athletes must be attached to a university as a student. That varies from university to university and in particular countries where higher learning would also vary. The bottom line is that to compete at the Games the athlete must be a student of a university whether full time or part time.

Fang Bo and Yan An played in it before. I'd love to know how their classes were going.

China has over 2000 universities and colleges with over 20 million students, it is not hard to see Fang Bo and Yan An as part of those institutions, especially as China leads the world in Sporting academies of higher learning, including the only table tennis university in the world.

Read between the lines. Some countries send representatives who are legitimate student-athletes who truly balance their sporting life with academic studies. Some countries send representatives who are professional athletes who have minimal university ties, and therefore a clear advantage. |

Many professional ping pong players in China don't even complete (normal) high school. They go to special schools. And basically train ping pong full time.

Those ''special schools'' in China maybe are institutions of higher learning, since high school as you know it exists differently in China.
