Ever seen a 1800 8 year old being coached by his 1600 dad? He's all ears during timeouts / end of the game.

FastForward: he's grown into a 14 year old 2400 kid. His 1600 dad tells him what to do at practice, what does the kid do? Roll his eyes as if to say 'Get the fxxx out of here, dad. Don't teach me how its done'. Then, perhaps, the dad tries to show him how it is done with his relatively shitty technique, makes a mess of service returns and the kid smirks, shakes his head and looks around at his practicing buddies as if to say 'I can't believe I have to take orders from this guy'!

But wait, things get worse: his 1400 uncle snattily dressed in a polo shirt and trousers with even shittier technique (relatively, again) then stands all over him pressuring him to deliver. Of course, he's got to listen to both of them as otherwise, they shall beat the sh!t out of him when he gets home & make him live in the garage for a month?

Well, that's what ZJK feels his life is like sometimes. From 5:10 on in the clip below...

He still has much to learn from his uncle and his dad.
By the way, they know the techniques and tactics better than him.
He just let the ball get too low and too late

(slevin)  Ever seen a 1800 8 year old being coached by his 1600 dad? He's all ears during timeouts / end of the game.

Yes I have.  But did the kid become an 1800 8 year old all by himself?  Who got him to 1800 in the first place?

FastForward: he's grown into a 14 year old 2400 kid. His 1600 dad tells him what to do at practice, what does the kid do? Roll his eyes as if to say 'Get the fxxx out of here, dad. Don't teach me how its done'. Then, perhaps, the dad tries to show him how it is done with his relatively shitty technique, makes a mess of service returns and the kid smirks, shakes his head and looks around at his practicing buddies as if to say 'I can't believe I have to take orders from this guy'!

This is a thorny problem.  If the kid is now 14 and a 2400 player, he most likely has gotten extensive training at the World Class Something or Other Training Center.  His dad ain't gonna get him to 2400 with a 1600 level technique.  Not gonna happen.  But his dad probably (or perhaps Donald Trump) did pony up considerable cash for equipment, travel and training.

The ungrateful little perisher needn't take his dad's or his uncle's advice regarding TT technique.  They may or may not be somewhat helpful regarding table tennis tactics and strategy if the now 2400 little smirker and head shaker has not reached 2500 or the exalted 2600 level because he is basically a wham-bam serve it up and put it out of play smacker and they see opportunities for more sensible play that perhaps he doesn't see.

Yeah.  His dad's still his dad and his uncle his uncle.  He can always prosecute them for child endangerment and assault and if they persist in this contemptible behavior he should run away from home, live in a cardboard box in Northern or Southern California and hope that a well heeled table tennis patron will take pity on him and finance his training and living quarters at the Whizbang Training Center of Genuine Excellence just outside of downtown Milpitas or better yet the Hollywood Hills.

Well, that's what ZJK feels his life is like sometimes. From 5:10 on in the clip below...

I tuned in from 5:10 on in the clip below and I'm as befuddled as you are.  After all, hasn't ZJK won just about everything in TT there is to win?  And a couple of guys are showing him how to loop an undersipn/sidespin serve.  You'd think that after at least 10,000 hours of practice he'd be able to do this by now.  Jen bushi dongxi a!

whatever you mean, I think Cai Zhenhua showed great FH technique to loop those half long underspin ball, although he has some advantage receiving Shang Kun's serve because he's left-handed. Zhang Jike is not good at this, he prefers to use his BH to attack those balls. Zhang Jike should listen to these great coaches, his FH has become his biggest weakness for a while.

Anyone up for the task of translating the following passage?  Especially those underlined.

Quote

I agree with what appears to be the criticism of ZJK's fh receive. He waits too much, the ball drops, and then he tries to spin his way back up. The coaches appear to be right, as far as someone like me can tell.
Not to worry tho. The King will be ready.

Actually, LGL has been training XX sort of the same too, may be it is some new stuff.

Zhang Jike has beautiful and effective strokes. Neither Cai Zhenhua or Liu Guoliang can hold a candle by comparison...

Xu Xin has apparently learnt for the first time in his twenty years of ping pong how to make use of his fingers to drive his backhand. Something that was maybe apparent to Wang Hao from the start.

At last, thank you.  And to whose credit is that?

It's not explicitly credited but perhaps Wu Jingping.

Ma Lin never got it ("the technique") during his entire career.
Xu Xin feels lucky that he has been able to get it before retirement.
