Would like to make a TT top to official dimensions (5'x9'x3/4") and materials, for much less than $100, not including the legs and frames. The standard 4'x8'x3/4", MDF panels sell for about $30 and buying 2 of them for $60 would only get me a 5'x8' table.
Does anyone know what material is used by TT manufacturers? MDF? Particle board? Plywood? Also what kind of paint is used to maintain the correct ball bounce? Finally, where can I get 5'x9' (or at least 5'x4.5') panels?
Thanks in advance !! |

thanks for the link, I missed that one. Good info about the 5'x5'x1/2" panels; hopefully they make them in 3/4" thickness too.

MDF comes in 5 X 10 in a variety of thicknesses.
google "mdf 5 x 10" to find a local source this place sells baltic birch up to 30mm thick: https://forestplywood.com/product/baltic-birch/#specifications |

YOU can find a good table for under 100$ on craigslist or offer up.
save yourself the hassle... (that is what I would do) https://offerup.com/item/detail/334545903/?ref=Search (sample) |

Yes I tried that but, as expected, I could only find tables with a 1/2" top in that price range.

Thanks for that, I found a couple of local places that have thicker MDF panels. Is MDF what TT table suppliers use? Or is it HDF, particle board, plywood, ...?

Go to megaspin.net, go to the tables section and see the table comparison chart. Many different materials are used. Mdf, hdf, particle board, chipboard, etc. The $1800 dollar ittf approved butterfly tables at the club I play at are compressed particle board. So it is definitely not the cheap particle board most people think of. Quality matters. |

I wonder if a 1/2" top can be made to feel and play like a thicker top if I somehow glue a 1/2" MDF panel to the underside of it?

This thread moved right into the wood, but the real problem with making your own table is finding a decent paint.
