Hello,
I am lost trying to find cheap plastic balls for a robot (iPong v300). I have started with Kevenz 3 stars (Amazon, $18/100). Not sure what kind of plastic they are made of but they don't smell of celluloid.
I washed them but they still leave a lot of white residue on the rubber. At this point this is the main reason for replacement. I can't tell if they bounce properly or not coming out of the robot.

I see on ebay several balls labelled as "ABS" or "Poly" for ~$18-40/100. Any of them good enough for a robot?

HUISHENG S40+ 3 Star plastic ABS Seamed Ping Pong Ball Table Tennis ball 50 pcs ($40 per 100ct)

XVT 1 Star ABS 40+ New Material Seamed PP Ball Table Tennis ball 100pcs

1star ITTF DOUBLE FISH New Poly 40+ seamed PP Ball table tennis ball 100pcs/box

ITTF Approved SANWEI New Poly 40+ seamed 1 star table tennis ball 100pcs

from Amazon: iPong Table Tennis Ball Set (100 Count, 2-Star Quality) $24

They are celluloid. White powder on celluloid balls is normal. What doesn't wash off will wear off with time.

Celluloid is what I would use in a robot until plastic balls become higher quality and more standardized.
Let's say you spend twice as much money and purchase one piece Chinese plastic balls for your robot and then you play a tournament on the Nittaku ABS. Will you be helped by the fact that you had plastic balls in your robot? I don't think so. The plastic balls vary so much that you might as well use celluloid in your robot. You will get better quality for the money and they will last longer.

If you must have plastic, the Joola Flip are not too bad.

I broke one Kevenz ball and it does not smell of celluloid. It smells of acetone. Also, the material feels harder and more difficult to break compared to celluloid from my youth.

The most important to check is if your robot is designed for 40 or 40+ ball. If your robot is for 40 but you use 40+ balls , it will get stuck. So , check it first.

However , if you want to get the feel of 40+ ball with good roundness and weight (assume that your robot can use 40+ ball) , try SANWEI 1 STAR ABS. With price below 30 USD from AMAZON , you will not regret. You also need to clean (rinse with water) to remove the powder out before using the new ball. This will help to get more consistence ball out of the robot. Below is the link.

I ended up ordering 2** DHS D40+ with Ding Ning pic on the box for $38/100 from eBay from China.
The main reason is that I had $30 coupon I needed to use.

The robot can take 40+.
I may try try SANWEI 1 STAR ABS as well or those 144 cnt 3*** from TTNPP.

I reported incorrect info earlier.  I have Kevenz white and Mapol orange balls. Mapol balls smell like acetone when broken, Kevenz smell somewhat like old celluloid balls, but not quite.

Now I realize that Kevenz balls do not work well with IPong v300 probably because they they are 40, not 40+. I should have checked before ordering.  Both balls seem very durable and bounce similarly.

3 Star MAPOL balls $19/100 at Amazon.
