Ok I’ve been playing last couple of months with medium pips and although I’ve won some good matches I’ve struggled with control. Will probably go back to short pips unless there is a medium pips that’s not too weird. Has anyone tried Pistol 2?

Lower spin short pips are basically the same as medium pips. Spectol Blue/Red for example

While Spectol is definitely a low spin short pip, I would never classify it as a medium pip. It's not "basically the same". That being said, Spectol is probably my favorite low spin short pip that can't be classified as a medium pip. Though it seems Dave already has experience with Spectol

I am not going to pretend like I know pips more than you do. However, I can feel what you are going through because I have been there. Before I answer your questions, I'd like to share with you and everyone my experience. It might be boring to some of you who do not care about pips. I played with short pips most of my life. Then, I tried some medium and long pips to see if anything interesting that they can do for me, but I always go back to short pips. I am sure that you have tried SO MANY short pips out there that you are getting tired of them too. For inverted rubbers, it's easier for one to switch from one inverted rubber to another (brand). With short pips, it is much more difficult to switch from one to another. Shen I tried medium pips (MP) or long pips (LP), I had to change my strokes and angles of the paddle. It seemed to me that I had to put in the same amount of effort to change from SP to MP and from SP to LP. So, I skipped the MP. I went straight to long pips. I wanted to have a long pips that can chop some, hit some, and block some. I found only one that fits my requirements, and I was happy with it. It's TSP Curl P2 with 1.4-1.7mm sponge. I don't want to go into the details why picked that, but yes, I tested the OX and the 1.3mm versions, I couldn't deal with them. IMHO, no matter what medium pips or long pips that you tried or will try. They will feel weird to you unless you stick with ONE and only one for at least a year. It took me a few years to get very comfortable with short pips and to be confident with short pips. It would probably take me a few years playing with medium pips or long pips to say it's not weird (anymore) . So, what's my answer? I have been through what you are going through right now, so my advice to you is to go back to short pips and enjoy it. If you want to play with medium pips, then do it, but you need to stick with it for one full year. You will master it just like short pips. Good luck,

Dave, we've met and played some. I play short pips FH, so I tried taking away as much as could from you. I play Spectol Blue FH. I play a lot of flat drives and counterattacks.
I formerly used Blowfish+. I switched back to smooth for a short time, hated it, and then back to short pips. They simply make it more fun because my instincts are so tuned to them.

I've been using short pips on both sides since February( rakza po on forehand and speedy soft dtecs on backhand), after 2.5 months I started to experiment with Der material spezialist power pipes because I wanted even more sink than speedy soft dtecs. I found that against agressive opponents playing with half long pips is fine since they block very effectively. Against lower rated players I struggled a lot more though because of the lack of attacking power on slow dead balls. After that I experimented a bit with the Moristo SP in 1.8 which didn't give any disturbance at all compared to the speedy soft dtecs and the power pipes. So I switched back to the speedy soft dtecs. My advice is similar to speedy's stick with what you like. If you are having control issues just go back to short pips.

A way I distinguish short pips from medium pips is the ease in which the rubber can grip and lift the ball. Rubbers like Friendship 563, Victas VO 101, and DHS 651 are low grip and leave the racket very quickly. Spectol, despite being on the lower spin end of short pips, have grip (the type of grip that doesn't necessarily mean spin) and I can feel it. I personally hate medium pips. Spectol is an amazing short pip that I like a lot.

The sponge is a factor. The attack 8 sponge is very soft and makes spins easy.

Exactly my problem. Against defenders or lower rated players that don’t come at me I struggle. I still usually pull the games out, but it’s a struggle. Also 3 of the pips right dead center broke on me. Only had the pips for 1 month. Materialspezialist Power Pipes.

DMS has a lot of problems with durability and consistency of quality in my experience. What short pips were you using before you dwitched to medium pips?

Interesting that you mention the Curl P2 because I know two players who are using that rubber very succesfully aswell. It's quite deceptive to play against and has great attacking possibilities.

Yes. I learned about the Curl P2 from my friend, Dickie Fleisher. He uses Curl P2 OX on his forehand, and he can attack very well. I can't use OX. Coming from SP to LP is hard enough already, so I used thicker sponge to reduce errors as much as possible. As you all can see, I went back to short pips. It is much more confortable and is easier for me to attack.

I haven’t decided which SP to go back to. Might find something better, but somehow always seem to go back to Victas 102. I bought a sheet of Moristo SP Ax and it’s good as well. Have it in 1.8. Might have to look into curl P2. I’d play with it in 1.6.

BTW, I tried short pips on both sides, then short pips on forehand and Curl P2 on backhand, but then, I went back to inverted on forehand and short pips on backhand. It was just too much to adjust from short pips to anything else. With short pips on both sides, I could still beat a 2100 or 2150 player, but I was struggling and wasn't happy the entire match. So, I went back to inverted on FH and SP on BH. Do whatever that make you happy and feel satisfied after the match, just saying...
