Understanding Fabric Weights: A Guide for Sewing Beginners

Like selecting the ideal paintbrush for a masterpiece, choosing the appropriate fabric for your sewing project is important. What Is Fabric Weight?

Simply put, fabric weight describes how heavy or light a fabric is per square inch. It depends on various elements, including the thread size, the knit or weave density, the fabric's make-up (such as cotton or silk), and even the dyeing or printing procedure. There are exceptions to the general rule that lighter textiles are more drapey and heavier fabrics are more opaque and resistant. A light cotton poplin, for instance, may be rigid, whereas a hefty wool crepe keeps its flexibility.

To choose the right fabric for your sewing project, consider several factors, including weight, drape, stretch, breathability, and softness. This practical tutorial will help you solve the mystery of fabric weight.

Understanding Fabric Weight Units

Fabric weight is typically measured in grams per square meter (g/m² or gsm) or ounces per square yard (oz/y²). To convert from metric to imperial units, divide the weight in g/m² by approximately 33.906. Conversely, multiply the weight in ounces by 33.906 to get the weight in grams per square meter.

Some sources may present fabric weight in grams per linear meter (gsm), which is not equivalent to g/m².

Fabric Weight Categories

Fabric websites often categorize fabrics into different weight classes, making choosing the right one for your project easier. While these categories are somewhat subjective, they provide a helpful framework. Here are the common weight categories:

Very Light: Up to 4 oz. (135 g/m²)

Examples: Liberty of London Tana Lawn (76 g/m²), Atelier Brunette Viscose Dobby (90 g/m²)

Light: 4 to 6 oz. (135 g/m² to 200 g/m²)

Examples: Nani Iro Double Gauze (140 g/m²), Cotton+Steel Rayon (145 g/m²)

Medium: 6 to 8 oz. (200 g/m² to 270 g/m²)

Examples: Cotton+Steel Canvas (200 g/m²), See You at Six French Terry (250 g/m²)

Medium-Heavy: 8 to 10 oz. (270 g/m² to 340 g/m²)

Examples: Robert Kaufman Ventana Twill (270 g/m²), Kokka linen-cotton canvas (280 g/m²)

Heavy: 10 to 12 oz. (340 g/m² to 400 g/m²)

Examples: Robert Kaufman 10oz. Denim (340 g/m²), Little Fabrics Wool Coating (350 g/m²)

Very Heavy: Above 12 oz. (400 g/m²)

Examples: Telio Boucle (500 g/m²), Shannon Faux Fur (570 g/m²)

Keep in mind that fabric weight is only one component of the puzzle. Creativity and adaptability are essential to sewing. If your design calls for a medium-weight fabric, don't worry if the fabric you choose feels more "light-medium." These suggestions offer basic direction, but a small weight change won't greatly affect the finished product.

I recently bought a very similar one, the Joola Inside 25, when it was on sale for Prime day. Real quality product, highly recommend! The two piece design saves money, but is actually pretty helpful for home play. You can keep one end attached to a robot and put away the other half when not using.

what a great price for a high quality 2.5 top table! I wonder what those 3 offer more to justify a cost 3 times higher and some?

The only argument I can see is that when rolling the tables away again and again in shared environments, the 2 halves won't hit each other as it's often the case with the Tour style separated halves. Then in a full time club or at home the Tour 25mm is a no brainer.
