    Posted: 04/15/2007 at 1:40am
I have developed a pretty strong and consistent FH loop, however only when FH to FH (crosscourt)... I seem to have a hard time hitting powerful, spinny loops both straight FH from FH side and crosscourt from BH to FH.
Because of this, my game becomes very monotonous and my opponents often predict my shots and no matter how spinny and powerful these are, they are blocked and more often than not, counterattacked.

Any tips as to how I can expand my FH capabilities?

Thanks in advance!

Multiball drills are your friend, practice hitting those shots and your weakness will decrease.

When I FH loop straight instead of cross-court, I let wait longer for the ball to come before making contact. That makes the angle change easier. If you make contact with the ball at the same spot for both cross-court and straight shots, it will be more difficult.

I do what ppgear does, but I also cock my wrist differently. Instead of brining my wrist back and snapping through the ball it stays back more and snaps across the back of the ball.

at first, I would suggest trying practice inside out FH (looping FH from the BH corner to ur partner's BH), try to make 10-15 or 20 loops back to back. Then, move on to the center of the table to ur partner's BH corner. When u already master those 2 drills, then move on to ur FH corner to ur partner's BH corner. It should be really easy then, when u already practiced the 2 drills above consistently.
Hope this would help.

Oh, btw, if u cannot loop inside out consistently at first, try to just drive the ball on the table, then also drive from the center of the table. It should increase ur ball feels for those shot. But keep practicing ur crosscourt shot, since only practicing the down-the-line shot might mess up ur current technique.

Keep practicing the above points . During this phase try to hit the center of the table . A FH loop on center is a good variation that the wide one (which I assume you have) . Also change of angle is minimal and therefore the hit ratio will be high .

One major characteristic to mention about "inside-out" loops is that there should be some noticeable sidespin going in the opposite direction that your normal loop might have. For example, a right-hander's normal loop should go either straight or have a slight curve to the left. An inside-out loop will curve to the right.
