I think it is a difficult question. Even between hinoki and hinoki could be very different. My Kokutaku is way faster and with more control compared to my Cypress R and Speed 90.
I am also curious to know what other people think about it. |

If one-ply is better that would suggest that wood is better than composite. In one-ply it's all about that particular piece of wood; In multi-ply there is more room for variables and variety.

I have a TSP one ply that is faster than my LKT Willpower but it is heavy, 94g. Same with the H1-9. It has a soft feel even though it is fast. The strange thing is, it actually gives MORE spin with the same rubber (Energy) than with the Willpower.
If I could get a lighter one that is a little slower, I would use that. The difference in spin is alot and confirmed by my playing partner. The bat is just too fast for the short game for me. I can counter and kill but the bat makes the Energy just too bouncy in the short game. Cole says he has seen the same thing, more spin because of the bat. I will try to get a lighter one to see how that works. My partner ordered the lightest one he could get from a supplier, (H1-9) and got one at 72g. It was so slow he sold it right away. (about All-) Too bad the one ply are so $$$$$. Might be awhile, |

1 ply blades are like sweepstake. There is so much parameters that make them low, average, good, exceptional that you should test them before buying. In other words, each one is unique. Depending of the age of the tree, how long it has dried, where it's been cut, how good is craftsman. Long ago I had a H-1-9 from tibhar which was great, fast and very fragile. It broke after 1 unexpected encounter towards the edge of the table...I tried another one recently which had nothing to do with the original one. Hinoki is part of the mystery. Some find it soft, some other hard, some stiff, some flexible, some light, some heavy. I suspect top players to spend days at the manufacturers testing one after another trying to find the good one. Alas, we, mortals, are not given such oportunity...

I can tell you from first hand experience that one of the disadvantages of 1 ply hinoki blades is their delicacy. It's very easy to break them in half or crack them if you accidentally hit the table or lose your grip on the blade. :( Layered blades are much more durable and also are not as subject to warping.
