Hock is a guy who made defensive blades up until a few years ago. I guess he used regular like cabinet wood. His blades tend to be huge with a shovel shape. They are thin 3 and 5 ply. They are usually defensive with a very low "thunk" tone that allows you to chop and take a whole lot off the ball with velvety control. Many hardbat players like to combine this with leyland rubber to make the "classic hardbat." I had one once and couldn't get rid of it fast enough. It was like slamming on the breaks. I couldn't even chop the ball back onto the table. Some guys are true artists with those things, though.

I know that would help me(as well as other rookies/have not played in years guys) a "LOT", to understand more of what is being discussed on some , if not all of these topics.

My knowledge is hardly vast except in the realm of chinese equipment.

Anybody who remembers the days when John Schnieder posted, that dude had vast knowledge.

The famous hardbat player Marty Reisman still makes Hock blades, he retrieved (hope it's the good word) Hock's stock of wood when he died several years ago.

Hock blades were legends in their time. These blades were used by some of the top players in the world in the 50s and early 60s when hardbat was king. Today they are very hard to come by.

I have managed to re-create these blades and they are available in my website. They are almost exact reproductions and ply almost the same. As far as the earlier comments posted that they were made from cabinet wood, the Chinese wood is even cheaper and who knows what chemicals are in the wood.

I wrote that about cabinet wood, and the more I think about what I was told, the more I'm thinking it was paneling. Whatever it was, it was cheap and available and such low quality that it turned out to be good in the opposite direction.
