This serve has had me wondering for along time, and my problem is how do people serve underspin and be able to have the ball stay on the table? i.e. roll back towards the net. I have tried it so many times but not sure how the ball can have so much spin as to spin back. Is there a specific part of the ball you are supposed to hit? Is there a specific time in which your paddle and the ball make contact?

your contact should be under the ball not the back of the ball,a lot of practice needed to be consistant at it

I agree with alfie, you have to contact the ball on the bottom. I also serve more towards the top of the paddle too.

hit the ball with the top of the bat, flick the wrist on contact for extra spin
this is not too hard to bring the ball back into the net, even though i use Sriver,
What ou really want to be doing is serving half long, something i have learned from a forum member from DTTW,
y
The half long serve is a serve that bounce twice on the opponents side, the second bounce should really be hitting the endline or clipping the edge of the table
the benefit of this serve is that it is too long to flick hard at and it is to long to touch short very effectively, so there is more possibility of opening up 1st

thanks asr1990 i do that serve often and its and effective serve, but what is the real benefit of being able to serve with so much spin? and also could it have sumthing to do with the table? cuz the table i play on is quite worn out.

I am able to do this regularly. the trick is, you not only have to hit the bottom, you even have to hit the front of the ball you have to sort of hit the front of the ball from the underneath, kind of like a scooping motion. (not sure how to explain clearly) lol
