I've only tried a few brands, but I rank them like this, in terms of feel and quality. Not including price because they are pretty similar.
1. double fish 3*
2. dhs 3*
3. butterfly3*

Same, I really want to try double fish. They seem very good from what people say and they are also economical. Butterfly, Nittaku etc. are so expensive!

I think I will continue to get a few DHS because everyone in my school club wants to play with them. But if double fish is good I will use them for my own personal use.

It would be cool if stores sometimes sell sample packs or variety packs where you get one of each brand or something and you could try them all out!

Double fish 3* is durable however has very hard feel. I prefer Gambler 3* for hitting feel and durability

I got some double fish, will try them later tonight. DHS and Double Fish are both quite economical. Euro/Jap balls are really expensive. I'd probably only buy these on sale...

The Nittakus are sweet, but I suggest using the balls used in tournament play to reduce the learning curve.

729 *** take abuse and keep taking it - the Die Hard of TT balls, but they fell so friggin' light and soft! I do not enjoy playing with these.

I prefer balls with a heavy, solid feel. These qualify...

BTY *** ..... Great ball, huge logo, expensive and they crack often enough
Nittaku *** Great ball, nice heavy feel, but they break too often and are REDICULOUS expensive.
2X Fish *** Great ball, Ok price
Athens *** Ditto
Gambler *** Platinum, too bad they are not ITTF approved, they are by far the longest lasting balls with similar feel to Nittaku, but are a dime a dozen
TSP *** Perfom like a somewhat lighter version of BTY *** and last the same

A few others...

Stiga *** Get real, try another ball
Sportcraft *** Not really a true 3 star, but OK for practice and durable

My top 2 picks are the double fish and nittaku 3 star.

Gambler 3 star bullet comes in at a close 3rd because you can buy them by the 36 pack :P

for the price, doublefish 3*** is the best.

that said, none of the 40mm balls are as good as they were when they were 38mm.

they all crack more than before and, more often then not, they are not round.

whenever i play, i generally play 2-4 hrs. at a time and i usually go thru at least 2 balls each time.

I never like DHS much, I think they feel too soft. The double fish feels much sturdier.

hey Guys,

According to the ITTF Minutes, point #6
http://urlcut.com/hardballs

there is a true hope of the DHS ballls becoming HARDER and thus more DURABLE very soon, -- just what we desire so much !!!
To check if the balls improve in quality, we have to look out the DATECODE on the DHS boxes when buying.Once the datecode is anything after September 2007   -- it is a sure sign of the improved balls.
-----------------
Is there anybody who`s already happened to try the "newly designed"DHS balls ??? Post here your impressions please !!

Thanks
Igor

PS\\ Below is the clue how to read datecodes on ball boxes \ cartons (the encoding system effective for all ball brands as of Jule 2004)

A=1
B=2
C=3
D=4
E=5
F=6
G=7
H=8
I=9
X=0

For example, if you see four letters on a box
XF XG = 06 07 ===> Production Date: June
2007

yeah, i think it's doubtful that any of us will see the new DHS balls anytime soon. Retailers will be peddling the old stock for some time to come.
