Those aren't exhibitions but an actual competition (Norwich Union Masters) held in the UK c.1980.

Actually you're way off.The commentator is Tony Gubba,who did all the minority sports for the BBC for many years.Matt Syed has only been commentating since about 1998-it will have been him doing the 06-07 Worlds.

Since I didn't start playing 'til after the 11-point rule, it seems so foreign to hear the announcer say a score like "16-14!" :P

actually theres 3 commentators, 2 i heard recnetly, syed and someone else, and the old dude, the only time i heard him is 94 euros, does he still commentate?

The 'old guy',Tony Gubba,is still going.The other voice you might have heard (quite a strong Lancashire accent) is Don Parker,ex-England player and coach,husband of 1976 European Champion Jill Hammersley.
And Stellan Bengtsson,no less, is on some English commentaries from the late 90s. |

Syed is the enthusiast,keeps saying things like 'Liqin is in the zone and going for broke','the ball can revolve ten million times a second and crosses the net at speeds in excess of 100 mph' etc;
 Don Parker comes in between serves and says technical things,fairly factual.
Gubba is on the clips from Stevieoddsocks-he was a commentator who did loads of different sports for the BBC,pretty versatile guy . |
