blade weight is meaningless for me in comparison to the weight and balance of the assembled bat with rubber. My current hardbat is 121g and perfectly balanced, and I am pulling off reflex blocks and attacks that I never could have with a 160g+ double inverted setup. The blade is pretty heavy at 101g, but the whole setup is light and balanced low.

80 grams or less blade would give me choices of one rubber weight less than about 55 grams, another less than 60 grams (uncut), this would give the total weight of the set up about less than 160 grams (the limit for my comfort level is 165 grams)

My limit is also 165g total. 82-87g is a good weight for a blade, but it can be heavier if the head size is smaller. Lighter blades can get a bit head heavy however.

Dear Borko,
I have used blades ranging from 80 gram to 96 gram. What I found that it's not the weight that really counts but the balance of the blade. For instance, my Korbel is 89 grams but with two Sriver EL or two Mark V, it is perfectly balanced and does not feel heavy. My WRB type of blade weigh only 83 grams but felt heavier than the 89 gr Korbel. If you ask, my perfect weight will be 85 grams, in ranges of 83 grams to 87 grams. My question is (it's been bothering me since the Q&A Borko Interview): how do you arrive at the desired weight, let's say 85 grams plus/minus 1-2 grams, given all the variables involved in making a blade? I mean that density of wood, size of wood, number of ply, amount of glue, etc., how do you know that it will yield the desired weight? Is it by trial and error, or with your vast experience you already know in advance? |

Tough question! I've just written and erased three answers, here is my final answer (for now)
I've thought about past combinations I've especially liked, and find that: a) I always choose rubbers to put the overall weight of the setup near some ideal weight for me that I really should measure but don't know except by feel. b) I use heavier, harder sponge rubbers on blades with a soft outer ply. c) I use lighter, softer tensors on blades with a hard outer ply. d) I like the balance to be more towards the sweet spot of the blade, with rubber. I've never had a problem with Stiga WRB blades, for example. Thing is, those hard plied blades have tended to be heavier among those I've tried; the soft ply blades, lighter. So the weight of the blade can vary and I'll pick a rubber that fits it. On the other hand, if you gave me a lighter blade with a hard outer ply, I'm sure I'd still be happy - I've never reacted to a blade feeling it was "too light" though the lightest I've used has to be at 80 grams. The one instance that seems wouldn't work for me given this logic is a heavier blade (let's say, 90+) with a soft outer ply - I haven't tried this, but it seems it would be harder to set up given what I think are my preferences - I'd want a harder sponge on it and it would go above my limit weight. There could be a way around that though and tensors are the answer. Take a lighter tensor that feels like a medium hard sponge - I could put that on a heavier blade with a soft outer ply, get the overall weight and balance that I want, and have something that plays the way I want it to. The only thing that can go wrong here for any ply choices is the blade is heavy due to a heavy handle, then the balance is going to move away from the sweet spot, closer to the handle which is not my preference. But if a blade is light, like my Visse is, any choice of rubber is going to balance out the way I want to. I know this is confusing. I guess what I'm trying to say is, heavier (90+) is fine, but with certain constraints on plies as my rubber choices will make it too heavy otherwise. Light (80+) gives more flexibility but I'd prefer a lighter blade not to have too heavy of a handle so the balance stays closer to the sweet spot, with rubber (Violin is a good example of a light blade that has a small handle) If I could ever decide on one rubber to be my favorite for all time, it would tell me pretty much exactly what weight I need and then planning the handle length / weight, outer ply would be pretty much a set deal! |

I usually choose between 86-93grams, I often dont go for the LIGHTEST setup since I use pips. Also it's not heavy at all if I use normal Bothsides, but as long it aint chinese rubbers

Here is the table with my blades/weights
Weights (naked blades; in grams)
----------------------------------------- T-4 unmarked 80-81 729 V-6 88 g Xiom Stradivarius 89 g AW-8 one-ply custom Hinoki 80 g
-----------------------------------------
Weights (with rubbers; in grams) ----------------------------------------- T-4 unm + 2 Srivers FX 164.4 AW-8 + Cream MRS + Sriver EL 2.1 171 V-6 + Inspirit Q 1.8 + Shenron 2.0 174 As it was here the balance and the lack or presence of vibration is what counts for most of us. When I was playing Sanwei T-1091A which was about 93 g of weight, decent balance and a LOT of vibration, my shoulder was hurting for two days after each practice. When I am playing V-6 which is only 5 grams lighter, with very good balance and almost no vibration to speak of, I have no problems. When I play AW-8 which is pretty light, but balance is shifted to the blade face because of light cork handle, no vibration but very soft feel, then overall outcome for my motion and shoulder is again different from V-6 (not bad but simply different). |

83-87 grams, but I would rather have a heavier blade that is well balanced with my 2.2 Chinese rubbers FH & BH than a light setup being too head heavy!!! It seems a hard and dense wood for the handle helps the balance quite a bit.

Depends what kind of rubber you used, heavy blade is good for long or short pip.

I think it is very depends, also. If you play close to the table with your pips and use them mostly for pushes, blocks and short game - the light blade is the best choice. You will have the fastest hand. (IMHO)

I think he is asking for your specific preference, not what is best for certain styles.

So far around 82 grams is ideal for me, but I haven't had anything lighter than that to try. I like my total setup to be about 160 grams or so.

Heavy rubbers make the bat head heavy. Since I am using fairly heavy rubbers, I prefer also my blade to be heavier - about 90 grams and handle should not be artificially light (i.e WRB etc.). My setup altogether is 190 g (shakehand). And nicely balanced.

I like a blade around 85-90 grams and the total weight of the blade around 170-175 grams. I have the V6 98 grams, which is the bigger brother to the V3 and with rubbers it is too heavy @ 187 grams, but the feel is balanced and hits very nice, just can't get over the extra weight. |
