Hey, about a month ago some of the ply in my Balsa Carbo X5 splintered, I hadn't banged the blade or seriously damaged it in anyway to make it splinter like it did, a player at my local club offered to fix it for me so he inserted glue into the crack and clamped it back together, it seemed to solve the problem and the bat was playing well again until tonight when it splintered, this time worse, in almost exactly the same place.  I've wrote an e-mail to the site that I got it from explaining it and hope to receive some type of correspondance.  But it's likely that I'll now have to get another new blade, the BCX5 suits my style well and I love the feel and light weight to it so I'd rather get the same blade if I had to get another one, basically I was just wondering if anyone else has ever had any problems with the blade, as I'm not sure if it'd become a recurring problem.

Yes that happened to me once. I fixed it with super glue and clamp.

All balsa blades are very fragile. It helps if you treat the whole edge with super glue/varnish/epoxy. The super glue works best for me and does not add too much weight to your bat.

I also like the bat a lot. Decent speed, control and light weight in the same package.

long time ago there was a guy asking the same question about these blades.i told him then that i had seen 2 blades with very same problems.the outer veneers would either separare at the junction with carbon inserts or start to splint and separate.both blades were sold in the us
neither blade was hit or used extensively.

I was afraid this would be the case, so what would you suggest?  Repair it every time it splinters?  Get a new one every time it splinters?  Or go for an alternative blade?

Or better yet, is there anything you can do to prevent this from happening at all?

sure, just get a different blade with similar characteristics, unless you want to buy a replacement, hoping that it would be a "normal" blade.
i tried one of these myself-nothing caught my interest.i was about to buy a kumpuru by butterfly, but i found something else.

Have you tried sealing the blade ? Seal the blade face until it is (very) slightly shiny and seal the sides of the blade rather heavily (more coats). After each coat, wait until it is dry. I use polyurethane or wood varnish. I believe this will prevent the blade from splintering. I seal all my blades regardless of the material.

Wow, logically that makes sense.  I've never done anything like that before, so you basically just apply a layer of wood varnish to the face and sides, wait for it to dry, and keep doing it until it looks decent?  And that definately prevents the plys from splitting from eachother?  Also does it affect the weight at all or any other characteristics?  Thanks.

Some say that it affects performance, some say it doesn't. Personally I cannot tell the difference. Sealing is meant to prevent splintering, and some are using also hairspray but I don't like it as I have the feeling it is not strong enough to bond the wood fibers. There are some threads about this matter, however here is what I do :
Stir the polyurethane or wood varnish thouroughly. In case you are using a spray one, then shake the can thoroughly. Apply it to a rag (neatly folded) which originates from an old T-shirt, and wipe it to the blade along the line of the wood fiber giving it one coat, then leave it to dry completely, and when you think it is not enough, give it another coat. For the sides of the blade, you can use the same method or you can also use a brush to give it a rather thick coat. Also in this case you can give it several coats.
As far as weight is concerned, I cannot detect the difference on my digital scale, so I guess if it does make any difference, it can only be in the region of around 1 gram. When you buy the polyurethane wood varnish, I would choose the matte (dull) finish.

I had one that i only used once, and i was about to sell it.  It was just sitting in the box otherwise.  On the BH side the top ply just peeled right off on its own.  So i wouldn't say there is a ton of durability with this blade.

edge tape should help, but make sure to seal the edge first, you could even try doubling up with the edge tape for more cushion

Thanks for the advice guys, it's really helped, if I knew I had some money coming in I wouldn't mind buying a new blade and sealing it before glueing rubbers to it for the first time, but at the moment I guess I'll have to look for a quick fix, i.e. more glue and clamping.

I have a Balsa Carbo x5 and have glued it twice.  The second time I removed the rubber it pulled the screen print completely off the blade and it stuck to my rubber, so it has no print now.  A printing defect, who knows???  It is not that important to me anyway but its too slow for me, so I would be willing to make you a good deal on it....... used 2 times.  I can even seal it for you if you'd like.   No dings or splinters.... as close to brand new as you can get, just without the screenprint.  PM me if interested.
